Sourcing fresh young coconuts from China
Fresh young coconuts from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant coconut lines. Importers must ensure the fruit is safe and legal before import into Great Britain; confirm inspection-certificate requirements for organic consignments with your organic control body. Specify husk condition, maturity and storage arrangements. Cambridge China Bridge sources fresh young coconuts.

Duty depends on the husk condition
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0801 covers coconuts, Brazil nuts and cashew nuts, fresh or dried, whether shelled or peeled. The relevant fresh coconut lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed.
The tariff attaches an organic-products import control. Confirm with your organic control body whether consignments from China need a Great Britain certificate of inspection. The certificate of inspection is issued by the exporter's control body in the country of export. Your company must be based and certified in the UK to import organic products. Confirm the paperwork with your organic control body before dispatch.
For classification, distinguish coconuts in the inner shell under 0801 12 00 00 from other coconuts under 0801 19 00 00. The table shows purchase formats sharing these codes. Send photographs and the husk-removal specification to your broker and confirm the commodity code. See the wider coconut and nut guide for the rest of the heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh young coconuts with outer husk | 0801 19 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Fresh young coconuts with outer husk removed, inner shell intact | 0801 12 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the drinking coconut and its husk
Specify the variety, growing origin, harvest maturity, fruit weight range, expected water yield and flesh texture. Agree whether the fruit is whole, trimmed to a shaped husk or stripped to the inner shell. Approve a cut-open sample as well as photographs: an attractive exterior does not establish drinking quality.
Record washing, dipping and other surface treatments, wrapping, carton ventilation and protection around trimmed tips. Agree storage temperature, temperature recording and remaining saleable life on arrival, supported by the supplier's shelf-life evidence. Ask a food laboratory to propose checks for residues and microbiological quality appropriate to the treatment and intended use.
Confirm with the plant-health authority whether coconut fruit from the proposed origin is currently classified as low risk. Low-risk goods do not require a phytosanitary certificate or plant-health pre-notification into Great Britain. This exemption does not replace food-safety obligations: importers must ensure their goods are safe and legal before import.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pallet consignment of trimmed fresh young coconuts retaining outer husk under 0801 19 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,300, so it is £860. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Husk and shell: compare the delivered trim with the approved sample; inspect tips, bases and shell eyes for cracks, punctures, mould and leakage.
Water and flesh: open representative fruit with clean equipment; check water appearance and odour, flesh texture and yield against the agreed specification. Hold suspect fruit for assessment rather than tasting it.
Cold chain and packaging: review temperature records; look for condensation, wet cartons, crushed fruit, torn wrapping and blocked ventilation.
Batch records: match cartons to packing records, growing origin and treatment details; check organic inspection paperwork where applicable. Use an agreed inspection checklist.

What goes wrong
A white trimmed husk can conceal cracks, mould or deteriorating water. Excessive trimming can damage the shell, while inconsistent maturity changes water yield and flesh texture. Inspect opened fruit from different cartons rather than accepting exterior photographs alone.
Warm handling, condensation and leaking fruit can leave a shipment with little saleable life. A trader's dispatch country may also differ from the growing origin. Agree origin records, treatment disclosure, arrival acceptance criteria and a process for holding disputed batches before ordering.
