Fresh dragon fruit duty and import checks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0810 covers other fresh fruit. Its dedicated pitahaya, or dragon fruit, line is 0810 90 20 10, carrying 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. The table shows purchasing variants sharing that code.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of organic products. For fruit ordered as organic, confirm the certificate of inspection and other requirements with your customs broker and an approved UK organic control body before dispatch. Separately, confirm the plant-health risk category for the exact fruit and origin before booking transport; official guidance says risk categories may change. This guide addresses imports into Great Britain.

Have your broker confirm the product description and commodity code before ordering, especially if the supplier offers processed fruit. For other fruit within this heading, see the fresh berries and exotic fruit guide.

Specify flesh colour, maturity and packing

Specify the variety, skin and flesh colour, fruit weight range, carton net weight and fruit count. Agree maturity, firmness, sweetness assessment and acceptable skin marks against a representative sample. Ask for photographs of cut fruit, not just coloured skins. Define how split fruit, damaged scales, soft flesh and decay will be recorded and handled.

Agree protective packing, carton ventilation, stacking and the temperature plan with the grower, packhouse and carrier. Request harvest and packing records, lot identification and pesticide test reports tied to the shipment. Fresh fruit must meet quality and labelling requirements throughout production and marketing; agree the label artwork before packing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of fresh dragon fruit under 0810 90 20 10, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,800, so it is £4,360. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: cut sampled fruit to check flesh colour and variety against the order; compare weights, carton counts and maturity with the agreed specification.

Condition: inspect scales, stem ends and skin for mould, shrivelling, splits and bruising; cut fruit to look for watery or discoloured flesh.

Cold chain: compare loading and arrival temperatures with the agreed transport plan; review logger records and inspect wet cartons or crushed stacks.

Records: match carton labels, origin records, lot identifiers and test reports to the shipment. Photograph defects and retain the inspection record using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Skin colour can conceal the wrong flesh colour or poor eating quality. A sample may also look sound while the shipped lot contains softer, more mature fruit. Packing that presses on the scales can damage appearance, while condensation and crushed cartons make decay harder to spot. Compare the actual packed lot with the specification before dispatch.

A supplier's organic claim can arrive without the paperwork the importer needs. Resolve the tariff's organic control before shipping rather than relying on a label photograph. For physical deterioration, agree who documents the arrival condition, separates affected cartons and handles a claim.
