Fresh avocado duty and import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, fresh avocados under 0804 40 00 10 carried 4% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Heading 0804 covers fresh or dried dates, figs, pineapples, avocados, guavas, mangoes and mangosteens. The table shows buying formats sharing the same fresh-avocado tariff line.

The tariff attaches organic import control and a unit-price measure. Organic avocados imported from China into Great Britain need a certificate of inspection for each consignment. Ask your broker to confirm the applicable customs valuation method and organic clearance documents. HMRC's simplified procedure value cannot be used where there is a transaction value.

Confirm the exact goods and origin with your broker using finding your commodity code. Describe the fruit as fresh avocados, with its packing and intended use. For the wider heading, see the fresh guavas guide.

Specify maturity, ripening and the packhouse

Specify variety, growing origin, harvest maturity, fruit size, carton weight and whether delivery is for ripening or ready for use. Agree how firmness, dry matter, skin damage and internal defects will be assessed. Identify the grower and packhouse behind the Chinese supplier, and agree temperature settings, handling records and responsibility for ripening.

For entry into Great Britain, arrange a phytosanitary certificate with the exporter. Confirm advance notification and documentary, identity and physical checks with the plant-health authority before booking freight. Fresh produce must meet marketing quality and labelling requirements. Confirm applicable food safety, traceability and crop-specific pesticide residue requirements with the relevant food authority.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of fresh avocados; FOB and freight figures are illustrative under 0804 40 00 10, invoiced at £3,800 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,300. Duty at 4% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,552, so it is £1,310.40. Import taxes total £1,562.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Fruit: compare variety, size and firmness with the specification; check shrivelling, bruising, cuts and stem-end decay.

Internal condition: cut sample fruit to check flesh browning, decay and uneven ripening; assess maturity against the agreed method.

Cold chain: inspect loading and arrival temperature records, ventilation, condensation and crushed cartons.

Documents: match grower, packhouse, origin and lot references across labels, shipment documents and test reports; check plant-health and organic paperwork where applicable.

What goes wrong

Fruit picked before adequate maturity may soften poorly or lack the expected eating quality. Mixed maturity within cartons makes ripening difficult to manage. Skin colour alone is an unreliable acceptance check across varieties, while internal browning or stem-end decay may only become apparent after cutting or ripening.

Temperature breaks, compression and wet cartons can leave saleable-looking fruit damaged inside. Agree sampling, arrival acceptance and the evidence needed for a claim before shipment. Use the quality inspection guide to turn these checks into an inspection brief.
