Floating swimming platform duty and controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 8907 covers other floating structures, including rafts and landing stages. Both listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The table shows platform variants using the same other-floating-structures code, rather than separate tariff lines.

The tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to 8907 90 00 00. Products containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market. Ask the factory to identify any foam filling and its blowing agent, and have your customs broker confirm the control and declaration requirements. The record also lists a DCMS export licence measure. Official guidance describes cultural-object export licensing for movements out of Great Britain.

Confirm the complete platform's construction and intended use with your broker before selecting the commodity code. Use the wider floating structures guide for related pontoons and rafts. The descriptions above concern complete floating structures; ask separately about loose decking, ladders and replacement fittings.

Specify buoyancy, swimmer access and anchoring

Specify the assembled layout, float material, decking, loaded freeboard and load distribution. Ask for calculations and test records covering swimmers gathering along an edge and climbing the ladder. Give the supplier the site's waves, current, water-level changes and exposure, then agree anchoring points and connection details against those conditions.

For platforms intended for or likely to be used by consumers in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Build the purchasing specification around wet barefoot use, slipping, sharp edges, finger traps at joints and safe access from the water. Ask for installation, loading, maintenance and inspection instructions with the finished design.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative club order of modular swimming platforms with ladders and anchoring kits under 8907 90 00 00, invoiced at £48,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £54,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,500, so it is £10,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Buoyancy: assemble sample modules, apply the agreed loading pattern and measure freeboard and tilt, including at the ladder and platform edge.

Decking and access: check the wet surface, exposed fixings, sharp edges, joint gaps, ladder grip and the security of ladder attachments.

Connections and anchoring: trial-fit pins, lugs and mooring fittings; compare materials and dimensions with the approved drawings and check for cracks or distortion.

Arrival condition: inspect floats for punctures or deformation, check missing fittings and compare the assembled platform with the approved sample. Plan the checks using our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A platform can sit level when empty but tilt when swimmers gather at the ladder. Thin floats reduce freeboard; weak connection lugs crack; wet decking becomes slippery; and ladder fixings pull away from an unsupported edge. Check the assembled system under the agreed loading pattern rather than accepting photographs of separate modules.

Poor anchoring can let the platform drift or load connections unevenly. Compare the delivered anchoring kit with the site design, and check packing has protected float walls and connection lugs. Before ordering, use factory verification to examine the maker's moulding, assembly and test records.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on floating swimming platforms from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% for other floating structures under 8907 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm that the complete platform belongs in that code.

What should I specify when buying a swimming platform?

Specify the layout, float and deck materials, loaded freeboard, edge loading, ladder attachments, joint details and anchoring for the actual site's water conditions.

How do I check a floating swimming platform?

Assemble a sample, apply the agreed loading pattern and check freeboard and tilt. Inspect wet decking, joint gaps, ladder attachments, connection lugs and anchoring fittings.

Does the F-gas tariff control apply to my platform?

The tariff attaches the control to the code. Obtain material and blowing-agent details from the factory and ask your broker to confirm applicability and declaration requirements before shipment.
