Duty on fishing swivels

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 20 October 2026, heading 9507 covers fishing rods, hooks and other line fishing tackle, nets and hunting requisites. Fishing swivels fall within other tackle, 9507 90 00 00, carrying 2% duty from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension for this line. The swivel variants in the table share this code.

The tariff attaches import and export controls on cat and dog fur: imports and exports of that fur and products made from it are banned. Specify metal swivels without fur attachments. It also attaches a cultural-object export licence control; confirm its relevance with your customs broker if re-exporting goods.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual product, especially for mixed tackle packs. See fishing hooks and related tackle for another product family within the heading.

Specify swivel construction and loaded rotation

Choose barrel, rolling or ball-bearing construction, with or without a snap. Specify body and eye materials, overall dimensions, eye opening, wire thickness, finish and intended freshwater or saltwater use. Supplier size names are insufficient: attach a drawing and retain an approved sample.

Agree the claimed breaking load, test arrangement and acceptance criteria. Test the complete assembly, including the snap, and check rotation while tension is applied. Specify a corrosion test suited to the intended use rather than accepting an untested saltwater claim.

For consumer sales in Great Britain, products must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Plan traceability on the product or packaging, where reasonable, with the producer's name and address and product reference or batch identification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 barrel fishing swivels under 9507 90 00 00, invoiced at £1,000 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,300. Duty at 2% is £26. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,326, so it is £265.20. Import taxes total £291.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £26 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Strength: pull samples of each ordered variant to the agreed test criteria; record whether the eye, body or snap fails.

Rotation: check that swivels turn under tension without binding, excessive play or eye pull-out.

Finish: inspect eye interiors for burrs that can damage line, and check plating coverage, rust and sharp wire ends.

Packing: check snap closure, sizes, pack counts and batch identification against the approved specification; inspect arrival samples for moisture damage.

What goes wrong

A swivel can spin freely in the hand yet bind under line tension. Soft eyes can straighten, snaps can open before the swivel body fails, and rough eye interiors can abrade line. Treat a breaking-load claim for the body alone as incomplete evidence for an assembly sold with a snap.

Mixed sizes and thin plating can escape a visual sample check. Compare each variant with the retained sample and repeat the agreed functional checks on arrival. Use the quality inspection guide to prepare a written inspection brief.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on fishing swivels from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 2% for other fishing tackle under 9507 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension.

Are ball-bearing swivels better than barrel swivels?

Choose by intended use and verified performance. Compare rotation under tension, breaking load, corrosion resistance and eye finish rather than relying on the construction name.

How do I check a swivel's breaking strength?

Agree a pull-test method and acceptance criteria before ordering. Test the complete assembly, including any snap, and record the failure location.

What should fishing swivel packaging identify?

For Great Britain consumer products, traceability should identify the producer's name and address and product reference or batch on the product or packaging, where reasonable to do so.
