Duty and classification for loose guides

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 9507 covers fishing rods, hooks, other line fishing tackle, nets and hunting requisites. Its 'Other' line, 9507 90 00 00, carries 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions recorded. The table uses this provisional line for guide variants; the supplied tariff descriptions do not specifically name loose rod guides.

The tariff record attaches cat-and-dog-fur import and export controls and a DCMS export licence measure. Commercial imports containing cat or dog fur are prohibited. Specify metal frames and ceramic or metal rings without fur. The cultural-goods licence concerns exports from Great Britain; ask your customs broker to confirm the declarations or waivers relevant to your shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, materials and the intended use of the loose guides before ordering. These table variants share a provisional code, so their descriptions do not establish separate tariff subdivisions. See the wider fishing tackle guide for complete rods, reels and other tackle.

Specify the ring, frame and mounting fit

Specify frame material and finish, ring material, ring bore, overall height, foot length and curvature, and the intended rod and line type. For tip guides, give the tube bore and insertion depth against the actual rod tip. Agree drawings and an approved sample rather than relying on the supplier's size names.

Agree smooth ring edges, secure insert seating, mounting feet that sit against the blank, and packing that separates frames. Guides sold as consumer products in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Include sharp feet, loose inserts and frame breakage in your sample assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 fishing rod guide sets, illustrative order subject to classification confirmation under 9507 90 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,000. Duty at 2% is £300. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,300, so it is £3,060. Import taxes total £3,360; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £300 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Rings: inspect inserts for cracks, chips and rough edges under magnification; pass the intended line through each sampled guide under tension and check for snagging.

Fit: measure ring bores, frame heights and mounting feet against drawings; fit tip-guide samples to the actual rod tip.

Frames: check alignment, welds, burrs and coating coverage; test insert retention and frame deflection using an agreed method.

Arrival: compare delivered variants with the approved sample, check for bent frames and loose rings, and retain batch identification. Use the quality inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A guide can look smooth but have a chipped inner edge that damages line. Rings may loosen after mounting, frames may arrive bent, and feet that do not follow the blank can make wrapping difficult. A tip tube that is too large gives a poor fit; one that is too small cannot be fitted as intended.

Record ring material and dimensions in the order, keep an approved sample, and agree retention and line-contact checks before production. Inspect delivered sets for missing or mixed guide sizes, and assess corrosion resistance for the intended freshwater or saltwater use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on fishing rod guides from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 2% for 9507 90 00 00, with no trade remedies or suspensions. This is a provisional code for loose guides; confirm classification before importing.

How do I specify a replacement tip guide?

Provide the actual rod-tip diameter, tube bore, insertion depth, ring bore and frame shape. Approve a sample fitted to the intended rod.

What should I check for ceramic guide rings?

Check for cracks, chips, rough inner edges and loose seating. Pass the intended line through sampled rings under tension and inspect it for damage.

Can the factory's guide size names be trusted?

Use measured drawings and an approved sample. Confirm ring bore, frame height and foot dimensions, because a supplier's size name may not describe the fit you need.
