Financial calculator duty and classification

Heading 8470 covers calculating machines and other machines incorporating calculating functions. Financial calculators do not have a separate financial-function tariff line. A model capable of operating without external electrical power fits the description of 8470 10 00 00; externally powered electronic models are distinguished by whether they incorporate a printing device.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all supplied heading 8470 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. This tariff record does not replace checks on the product's selling requirements.

Confirm the commodity code using the power arrangement and printing functions. The other-calculating-machines row is relevant only when checking a non-electronic design. See the import duty and VAT guide when calculating landed costs.

Specify financial functions and calculation settings

List the functions actually needed: time value of money, loan repayments, amortisation, discounted cash flow, net present value, internal rate of return and bond calculations. Specify payment timing, compounding and payment frequencies, cash-flow sign conventions, date entry, day-count conventions and rounding. Agree the entry method, memory behaviour and default settings after a reset.

Electronic calculators bring waste electrical equipment obligations; producers must register annually. Battery-equipped calculators also bring battery obligations. Where appropriate, instructions must identify the battery type. Under hazardous-substance rules, the product or packaging must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address. Arrange a testing and certification review for the exact model.

Approve a sample with the agreed firmware and an English manual explaining financial settings. Keep a written set of calculations with expected answers and the settings used. For the wider calculator range, see scientific calculators.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 40 battery-powered financial calculators under 8470 10 00 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £184 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,684. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,684, so it is £336.80. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Calculations: compare loan, amortisation, cash-flow and bond results against the approved answer sheet, including payment timing, rounding and cleared memory.

Keys and display: check missed or repeated entries, shifted functions, cash-flow editing, display segments and readability. Repeat the agreed script during arrival inspection.

Power and memory: check the supplied battery type, contacts, compartment closure, low-battery behaviour and whether settings survive power changes as specified. Test solar-assisted models under agreed indoor lighting.

Documents and identity: match firmware, model labels and packaging to the approved sample. Check importer details and battery instructions. For models within the electromagnetic compatibility rules, the manufacturer must supply relevant instructions in English.

What goes wrong

A calculator can produce a plausible but different answer because payment timing, compounding frequency, cash-flow signs or rounding differ from the buyer's settings. A factory firmware change can alter defaults or remove a financial function while leaving the casing unchanged. Compare settings and entry sequences before treating a mismatch as a calculation fault.

Repeated key entries, missing display segments and weak battery contacts can spoil financial calculations. On arrival, compare sampled units with the retained sample and run the same calculation script. Agree that any firmware, keypad or power-component substitution needs the buyer's approval.
