Sourcing electromagnetic flow meters from China

Electromagnetic flow meters for liquids from China carry 0% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. Intended use matters: confirm the applicable explosive-atmosphere requirements for hazardous-area instruments and any metrology conformity assessment for trade measurement with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources electromagnetic flow meters.

Zero duty on electronic liquid flow meters

Heading 9026 covers instruments measuring or checking liquid or gas variables. Electronic electromagnetic liquid flow meters normally fall under 9026 10 21 00. Dedicated parts and accessories may fall under 9026 90 00 00. The repeated electronic-flow-meter code in the table distinguishes product configurations, rather than separate tariff lines.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, both relevant lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. Neither lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty, a suspension or an attached import control. Import VAT is generally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code from the complete product specification and intended use. Supply water meters belong in heading 9028 instead. For the wider instrument family, see flow meters and pressure gauges.

Specify the liquid, liner and installation

Give the factory the liquid composition, conductivity, temperature, pressure and operating flow range. Agree electrode and liner materials, pipe bore, flange drilling, sealing faces and installation orientation. Ask the supplier to confirm suitability for the actual liquid, including abrasive solids or cleaning chemicals, rather than accepting a general water-test result.

Specify integral or remote display, power supply, output signals, cable length, earthing arrangement and enclosure protection. Ask for installation drawings covering full-pipe conditions, air pockets and nearby pipe fittings. Agree calibration points across the working range and link each certificate to the instrument serial number.

For potentially explosive atmospheres, ask the relevant authority whether the Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2016 apply to the meter. Match the declaration, any applicable category-dependent certification and protection marking to the model. For trade measurement, confirm with the relevant authority whether conformity assessment under the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 is required. Under electromagnetic compatibility rules, the manufacturer must supply relevant instructions in English.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 800 electromagnetic flow meters, illustrative order under 9026 10 21 00, invoiced at £96,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £99,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £99,500, so it is £19,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the sensor, transmitter, serial numbers, ordered materials and calibration records before installation.

Connections: measure bore and flange dimensions; inspect liner edges, electrode surfaces, sealing faces and cable entries for damage.

Performance: compare readings with a calibrated reference across the agreed flow range; check displayed flow, totalisation and output signals together.

Documents: during inspection, match certificates and drawings to the delivered model and check that installation instructions describe the supplied configuration.

What goes wrong

A meter can pass a factory water test yet give unstable readings in the buyer's process. Unsuitable liquid conductivity, air pockets, incomplete pipe filling or poor earthing can undermine measurement. An unsuitable liner or electrode material can deteriorate in service. Confirm the application and installation before approving the sample.

Remote transmitters can arrive with the wrong cable or configuration, while flange drilling and sealing faces may not match the pipework. Calibration paperwork can refer to a different serial number. Compare the delivered assembly with the approved drawings and records before commissioning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electromagnetic flow meters from China?

Electronic liquid flow meters under 9026 10 21 00 carry 0% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line.

What should I specify for an electromagnetic flow meter?

Specify liquid conductivity and composition, flow range, temperature, pressure, liner, electrodes, bore, connections, power, outputs and installation. Ask the factory to confirm suitability for your actual process.

Can I use the meter in an explosive atmosphere?

Confirm with the relevant authority which compliance requirements apply to that intended use. Check the declaration, any certificate the authority identifies as required for the equipment category and the protection marking against the exact model.

Is a calibration certificate enough for trade measurement?

Not necessarily. Ask the relevant authority whether a meter used to measure liquids for sale falls under the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 and requires conformity assessment. Settle the intended use before ordering.
