Sourcing electrofusion welders from China

Electrofusion pipe welding machines from China carry 0% UK duty under the relevant line of heading 8515. Mains-powered models must meet electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility rules before sale in Great Britain. Check fitting compatibility and fusion records. Cambridge China Bridge sources electrofusion pipe welding machines.

Zero duty on the relevant machine line

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8515 covers electric welding apparatus and parts. For machines joining plastic pipe through electrically heated fittings, 8515 80 90 00 is the candidate complete-machine line. The table shows alternative machine configurations sharing that code and relevant spare-parts lines. Compare the wider family in welding and soldering machines.

The selected lines carry 0% duty on goods from China. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty rate and no suspension on these lines. However, 8515 90 80 90 carries an anti-dumping or countervailing registration control. The UK Trade Tariff attaches this control; ask your customs broker to confirm its application and any registration requirement for your Chinese spare parts.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's operating method, material being joined and whether the shipment contains complete equipment or separately supplied parts. Do not select a metal-welding line simply because the fitting contains a heating wire. Check import VAT separately using UK import duty and VAT.

Specify fittings, fusion settings and records

State the pipe material, intended application and exact fitting families. Agree input supply, plug, generator compatibility, output range, connector types and cable lengths. Specify manual parameter entry or barcode reading, temperature compensation where offered, supported fitting sizes and the repeated welding sequence the machine must demonstrate.

Agree the weld-record fields, export method, error messages, calibration procedure and replacement leads. Confirm with the relevant authority which electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility rules apply to mains-powered welders. CE marking remains recognised for electrical equipment in Great Britain. Electrical equipment, cables and spare parts fall within hazardous-substance restrictions unless specifically excluded. Have testing and certification check the applicable requirements. If your business is an electrical-equipment producer, annual registration is required.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 electrofusion pipe welding machines, illustrative order only under 8515 80 90 00, invoiced at £4,500 free on board, with £500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,000, so it is £1,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Compatibility: connect the supplied terminals to your chosen fittings, scan their barcodes where supported and compare the displayed fusion settings with the fitting instructions.

Output and faults: measure output under load across the agreed operating range, run the agreed repeated-weld sequence and check how the machine reports an interrupted cycle.

Records and joints: export completed and failed weld records, match them to the sampled machine and fitting, and assess test joints using the agreed acceptance method.

Documents and arrival condition: check the declaration and model-specific reports, manufacturer and UK importer identification, English instructions, leads, connectors and enclosure damage. In-scope electrical products must show importer identification and a contactable address. Use quality inspection to record discrepancies.

What goes wrong

A quoted pipe-size range does not establish compatibility with your fittings. Wrong terminal adapters, incorrectly decoded parameters, damaged leads or unstable generator supply can interrupt fusion. Test the actual fitting family and intended power source rather than accepting a demonstration with an unloaded output.

A completed weld record does not establish joint strength. Poor pipe preparation, movement during fusion or cooling, and incorrect settings can leave a weak joint. Agree preparation, clamping, cooling and joint assessment with the fitting supplier, and check that failed cycles remain identifiable in exported records.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electrofusion machines from China?

The supplied tariff reading shows 0% duty under 8515 80 90 00. Confirm classification for your model. The general parts line has a registration control that needs separate checking.

Will a Chinese electrofusion machine work with my fittings?

Check the exact fitting family, terminal connections, fusion settings and barcode compatibility. Ask for a demonstration using your fittings and intended power source.

What compliance documents should I ask for?

Ask for the model-specific declaration, electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility reports, hazardous-substance evidence and English instructions. Check that the supplied model matches the documents.

Does a successful weld record prove the joint is sound?

No. It records the machine's cycle, while joint quality also depends on preparation, settings, clamping and cooling. Agree a separate joint assessment method with the fitting supplier.
