UK duty on domestic electric meat grinders

Heading 8509 covers domestic electromechanical appliances with a self-contained motor, excluding vacuum cleaners. Domestic electric meat grinders fall within its food-grinder line. The table shows configurations sharing that line and the separate parts line; these are not separate tariff classifications for each feature. This guide covers domestic models. Confirm the classification separately for equipment intended for commercial meat processing.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, domestic food grinders under 8509 40 00 00 and parts under 8509 90 00 00 carried 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or import controls on either line. Its fluorinated greenhouse gas control belongs to the other-appliances line, which is not used here.

Confirm the commodity code using the intended use, technical specification and whether the shipment contains complete machines or separately supplied parts. For the wider product family, see domestic food processors.

Specify the cutting head and motor together

Agree the meat preparation, plate hole sizes, blade geometry, auger fit, feed tray and supplied pusher. Define a repeatable grinding trial using the agreed meat, operating period and cooling intervals. Record throughput and texture rather than accepting a peak-power claim as proof of performance. Specify reverse operation, overload protection, head locking and replacement cutting parts.

List the materials and finishes of the tray, auger, blade, plates and sausage attachments. Food-contact materials must not adversely affect food or drink. Ask for material identification and test evidence suited to meat contact and the stated cleaning method. Agree which parts can be washed, how they are dried and whether dishwasher claims are supported.

Mains models fall within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Check technical documentation, the declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification. Electromagnetic compatibility rules cover electrical equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. Request the model's compatibility assessment alongside its safety reports. The importer must ensure instructions are in easily understandable English. Use testing and certification to resolve gaps before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 50 domestic electric meat grinders under 8509 40 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Cutting assembly: check blade orientation, plate seating, retaining-ring threads, head locking and spare-part fit against the approved sample.

Loaded operation: grind the agreed meat within the specified operating cycle; check texture, stalling, reverse, unusual vibration and leakage around the drive connection.

Feed and cleaning: check the supplied pusher, feed throat and guards against the approved design; dismantle the head and look for burrs, trapped residue, loose coatings and inaccessible crevices.

Arrival documents: match the rating label, motor, controls, cable and plug to the approved configuration and reports; check importer details, conformity marking and English instructions.

What goes wrong

A grinder may run freely without meat yet stall under the agreed load. Poorly matched blades and plates can smear meat rather than cut it. Loose head locks, damaged retaining threads and incompatible spare plates are reasons to hold the batch for investigation. Check samples from production and repeat the assembly and grinding checks on arrival.

Component substitutions can leave the shipped grinder outside the configuration described in its safety report. Treat changes to the motor, protection device, switch, cable or plug as approval points. A claim of stainless construction also needs checking part by part. Separately, electrical equipment producers must register annually; confirm whether your business has that role before selling.
