Sourcing electric glass annealing lehrs from China

Electric glass annealing lehrs and qualifying parts from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines, with no listed trade remedies. Powered-conveyor lehrs must meet machinery safety requirements before supply in Great Britain. Specify the glass load and cooling profile. UK duty on electric glass annealing lehrs

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8514 covers industrial or laboratory electric furnaces and ovens, other induction or dielectric heat-treatment equipment, and parts. Resistance-heated glass annealing lehrs are candidates for 8514 19 80 00; qualifying dedicated parts are candidates for 8514 90 70 00. The table separates product variants sharing these codes.

Both codes carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for either code. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the heating method, industrial use and whether the shipment contains a complete lehr or separately supplied parts using the commodity code guide. Separately supplied electrical components need their own classification check. See the wider electric furnace guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify the glass load and annealing profile

State the glass composition, article dimensions, wall thickness, loading pattern and required output. Agree the heating, soaking and controlled-cooling profile with your glass process specialist. Specify usable belt width, heated length, zone control, airflow, conveyor speed adjustment and how the supplier will demonstrate temperature uniformity under load.

Agree the site power supply, installed power, control drawings, temperature recording and access for replacing heaters and thermocouples. For powered-conveyor units, the machinery safety regime applies. Confirm with the relevant authority which UKCA or CE conformity route, declaration of conformity, electromagnetic compatibility evidence and English manual are applicable, using the wider guide to prepare your questions.

Require a trial using your actual glass and an agreed method for checking residual stress after cooling. Record loading, belt speed and temperature settings so the trial can be repeated at your site.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An electric glass annealing lehr with its conveyor, illustrative order under 8514 19 80 00, invoiced at £64,000 free on board, with £5,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £69,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £69,500, so it is £13,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Thermal performance: witness a loaded trial, compare measured temperatures with the agreed profile and check cooled glass for residual stress, cracks and distortion.

Conveyor: check belt tracking, transfer points, speed stability and glass support; look for snagging, abrasion or marks on the articles.

Safety and documents: check guarding, emergency stops, interlocks, over-temperature protection and earthing against the agreed design; match the declaration, marking, wiring diagrams and English manual to the supplied machine.

Arrival condition: inspect refractory, heaters, thermocouples, belt and control cabinet for movement or damage; reconcile loose parts with the packing list. Use the inspection guide to agree evidence before dispatch.

What goes wrong

An empty lehr trial can conceal uneven temperatures under a production load. A cooling profile that suits the supplier's sample may leave residual stress in thicker articles. Uneven loading, unstable belt speed and poor airflow can produce inconsistent results across the belt.

Transit damage can disturb insulation, temperature sensors and belt alignment. Agree who will assemble, commission and repeat the loaded acceptance trial at your site, and obtain heater and thermocouple specifications before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electric glass annealing lehrs from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for resistance-heated lehrs under 8514 19 80 00 and qualifying parts under 8514 90 70 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can I accept a temperature test with no glass loaded?

Use it as a preliminary check. Agree a loaded trial with your glass, loading pattern and cooling profile, then check the cooled articles for residual stress and damage.

Does a conveyor lehr need CE or UKCA marking?

Powered-conveyor units fall within the machinery safety regime. Use the wider guide to prepare questions for the relevant authority about applicable UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity, electromagnetic compatibility evidence and an English manual for Great Britain.

What should I specify before asking for a quotation?

Provide glass composition, article dimensions and thickness, loading pattern, output, annealing profile, usable belt width, site power supply and the loaded acceptance test.
