Electric dirt bike duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8711 covers motorcycles, mopeds and cycles fitted with an auxiliary motor. For complete electric dirt bikes without pedal assistance, check 8711 60 90 90, carrying 6% duty on goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension for this line. The table shows configurations sharing that code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The tariff attaches an import waste control, alongside waste export and cultural-object export controls. Waste shipment rules apply where the goods are waste. For a notified waste shipment from China into England, confirm with the relevant waste authorities who must submit the application and where; shipment awaits consent from the Environment Agency and the other authorities involved. For scrap, damaged or non-working bikes, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement before shipment. Confirm the export measures separately if planning onward export.

Confirm classification using the actual propulsion system and pedal arrangement through finding your commodity code. Do not transfer the pedal-assisted cycle lines or their trade remedies to a motorcycle without checking its design. For the wider heading, see petrol motorcycles.

Specify the terrain, battery and suspension

Describe the intended terrain, rider load and whether the model is for recreational riding, competition or proposed road use. Specify continuous motor power, controller settings, throttle response, seat height, ground clearance, suspension travel, wheel and tyre construction, brakes and final drive. Agree how range and climbing performance will be tested, including rider load, terrain and battery condition.

Fix the cell maker, pack model, battery management system, charger compatibility and battery retention in the specification. Ask for model-specific safety reports and review the applicable compliance route through testing and certification. Confirm with the relevant authority what safety-compliance evidence the importer needs before placing the product on the market. Check whether machinery safety rules apply to the exact model; where they apply, the responsible person must provide safe operating information and affix the relevant conformity marking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 electric dirt bikes; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8711 60 90 90, invoiced at £100,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £105,000. Duty at 6% is £6,300. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £111,300, so it is £22,260. Import taxes total £28,560; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £6,300 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Battery and charger: match identifiers to the approved sample; inspect pack locks, connectors, cable routing and impact protection. Check charging behaviour and signs of transit damage.

Frame and suspension: inspect welds, steering stops, fork alignment, seals and swingarm play. Check suspension movement and battery clearance against the agreed build.

Brakes and drive: test braking and throttle return; check wheel alignment, spoke tension, chain or belt adjustment, guards and critical fasteners against assembly instructions.

Identity and instructions: match vehicle, controller and battery labels to the specification and supporting documents. Check assembly, charging and maintenance information through quality inspection, then repeat condition checks on arrival.

What goes wrong

A sample ride can hide substituted cells, a different controller, weak battery retention or a charger that does not match the pack. Rough terrain can expose trapped wiring, loose spokes, leaking suspension and poorly adjusted brakes. Compare production samples with the approved component list and investigate unexpected heat, intermittent power or structural damage before accepting the batch.

A dirt bike description does not establish road suitability. Models that do not meet road standards must not be used on roads. Keep proposed riding use separate from performance claims and verify any road-use claim before advertising it. Once the product is on the market, the importer remains responsible for its safety.
