Sourcing dynamic braking resistors from China

Dynamic braking resistors from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant heading 8533 lines. Match resistance, pulse energy and cooling to the drive's braking requirements, and obtain material compliance evidence for components incorporated into electrical products. Cambridge China Bridge sources dynamic braking resistors.

UK duty on dynamic braking resistors

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8533 covers electrical resistors, including rheostats and potentiometers, but excludes heating resistors. Fixed braking resistors normally fall within the other fixed resistor lines, divided by power handling capacity. The variable resistor and parts rows apply only where those descriptions match the actual goods.

Every line in the supplied tariff snapshot carries 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control is recorded. This tariff snapshot does not establish the product's compliance for sale.

Give your customs broker the datasheet, power handling capacity, construction and braking function to confirm the commodity code. Check separately supplied resistors against complete braking assemblies. For the wider heading, see current-sense shunt resistors.

Specify the braking cycle and cooling

Identify the drive and braking unit, required resistance and tolerance, permitted minimum resistance, continuous dissipation, pulse energy, braking duration and recovery interval. Ask the factory to explain its rating under your operating cycle. A continuous power rating alone does not describe repeated braking performance.

Agree enclosure dimensions, mounting position, airflow, ambient conditions, terminal arrangement, cable insulation and thermal switch behaviour. For chassis-mounted resistors, state the mounting surface and cooling conditions used for the rating. Ask for installation clearances and a drawing showing how heat reaches nearby wiring.

For parts incorporated into electrical products, obtain restricted-substance declarations and material data matching the supplied part number. Manufacturers must maintain technical documentation demonstrating compliance with the hazardous-substance regulations. Agree the evidence needed for the intended finished product before approving the sample.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 enclosed fixed dynamic braking resistors under 8533 29 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,300, so it is £1,860. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Resistance: measure samples at the agreed temperature and compare resistance, tolerance and part markings with the approved datasheet.

Braking performance: test samples under the agreed pulse and recovery cycle; record temperature rise, resistance drift and thermal switch operation.

Construction: check mounting holes, enclosure, element supports, terminals, cable insulation and protective earth connections where specified.

Traceability: match batch labels, drawings and material declarations to the order; check packing protects ceramic elements and terminals. Use the inspection guide to agree the inspection scope.

What goes wrong

A resistor can match the ordered resistance yet fail during repeated braking because its pulse capacity or cooling assumptions differ from the application. Substituted elements, loose terminals and damaged ceramic supports can also escape a simple resistance check.

Keep the approved construction and operating cycle in the purchase specification. Investigate overheating or drift against the mounting, airflow and braking records before accepting a replacement described only as having a higher power rating.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dynamic braking resistors from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% on all heading 8533 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the exact line from the resistor's construction and power handling capacity.

Which commodity code covers a fixed braking resistor?

Other fixed resistors over 20 W are 8533 29 00 00; those not exceeding 20 W are 8533 21 00 00. Confirm that the shipment is a resistor rather than a complete braking assembly.

Can I buy a replacement by resistance and watts alone?

Also match pulse energy, braking duration, recovery interval, drive compatibility and cooling conditions. Compare the mounting and thermal protection with the original installation.

What documents should I request from the factory?

Request the datasheet, dimensional drawing, pulse-rating evidence, installation instructions, batch identification and restricted-substance declarations matching the part number.
