Sourcing drill chucks from China
Drill chucks and mounting arbors in heading 8466 carry 0% UK duty from China across the relevant lines. Workplace supply duties include safe-use information and necessary testing. Specify the mounting and verify runout on the assembled chuck and arbor. Cambridge China Bridge sources drill chucks.

Drill chuck duty and classification
Heading 8466 covers machine-tool parts and accessories, including tool holders for tools used in the hand. Drill chucks hold the cutting tool; mounting arbors and sleeves have a separate tariff line. The table distinguishes keyed and keyless versions within the same code. For the wider heading and workholding distinction, see lathe chucks.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Elsewhere in the heading, the supplied data attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to certain machine-parts lines. If your goods fall there, confirm the requirement with your customs broker.
Confirm the commodity code using the chuck drawing, mounting arrangement and intended machine. Do not classify a drill chuck as a workholding chuck merely because both are called chucks. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyed drill chucks, other tool holders | 8466 10 38 00 | 0% | None |
| Arbors and sleeves for drill chuck mounting | 8466 10 20 00 | 0% | None |
| Drill chuck tool holders principally for lathes | 8466 10 31 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the chuck and its mounting together
State keyed or keyless construction, clamping range, mounting thread or taper, rotation direction, intended machine and permitted speed. For threaded mounts, identify any retaining screw and its thread direction. Confirm whether the arbor and chuck key are included. Agree runout acceptance with the test-bar diameter and measuring position recorded.
Ask for an assembled sample on the intended arbor. Check clearance around the sleeve and whether the operator can tighten and release it on the actual machine. HSE explains that workplace supply obligations include safe-use information and instructions, plus testing or examination necessary for compliance. Request mounting, tightening and operating information with the supply.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 500 precision drill chucks; illustrative FOB value and freight under 8466 10 38 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £24,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,900, so it is £4,980. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Mounting: check taper contact or thread fit against the approved drawing and intended arbor; inspect for burrs and damage.
Runout: measure the assembled chuck and arbor with a test bar and dial indicator at the agreed position, against the agreed acceptance limit.
Grip and release: check jaw movement across the stated range, secure gripping and repeatable release; verify that the supplied key engages properly.
Condition and packing: check jaw surfaces, sleeve movement, corrosion protection and individual packing. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A chuck can look correct yet have the wrong mounting thread or taper. Runout may come from the arbor, chuck seating or jaws, so checking the chuck alone can miss an assembly fault. Uneven jaws can grip a test bar off-centre; rough sleeve movement and mismatched keys make tightening unreliable.
Do not approve substitutions from photographs alone. Compare replacement samples with the agreed drawing and repeat the assembled checks. Keep failed samples and inspection records so the factory can identify whether the fault concerns machining, assembly or packing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on drill chucks from China?
The relevant heading 8466 tool-holder and arbor lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Are keyed and keyless drill chucks under different codes?
The supplied tariff does not separate them by tightening method. Both may use the other tool-holder line; confirm the code from their intended use and mounting.
How do I check drill chuck runout?
Assemble the chuck on its intended arbor, grip a test bar and measure with a dial indicator at the agreed position. Compare the result with the purchase specification.
What should I send the factory before ordering?
Send the mounting drawing, clamping range, intended machine, rotation direction, speed specification and runout test method. State whether the arbor, retaining screw and key are included.
