Sourcing dried edible fish skins from China

Dried edible fish skins from China carry a flat 12% UK duty across the relevant supplied lines, with no trade remedy. For Great Britain, use an approved fishery establishment, arrange border paperwork and check whether the fish is wild or farmed. Cambridge China Bridge sources dried edible fish skins.

12% duty on the relevant dried-skin lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, the relevant dried edible fish offal lines under heading 0305 carried 12% duty for goods from China. The heading covers dried, salted, brined and smoked fish; this guide concerns dried edible skins. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

The selected lines attach veterinary control, including a Common Health Entry Document for products of animal origin, illegal fishing control, organic import control and an export CITES flag. For Great Britain, use an approved fishery establishment, pre-notify and arrange entry through a designated border control post; confirm the notification system with your customs broker. Wild-caught fish needs a validated catch certificate; ask your broker to confirm whether the farmed product is exempt from that scheme. Confirm the species-specific CITES position and the export flag with your customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using the scientific species name, salting, drying and any further processing. The table separates salted and unsalted trout skins under their shared code; these are product variants, not separate tariff lines. Ask your broker to confirm that the exact skin product belongs in the edible offal line. See the dried fish maws guide for the wider heading.

Specify the skin, drying and intended use

Specify the fish species, wild or farmed origin, whole sheets or cut pieces, skin thickness, scale removal and permitted flesh remnants. State whether the buyer will soak, cook or fry the skins, or sell them ready to eat. Agree moisture, salt, odour, colour, broken-piece tolerance and packaging against an approved sample. Obtain the complete ingredient and treatment list before accepting samples.

Check the import risk category before shipping. Medium-risk fishery products need a health certificate; confirm the documentation for low-risk consignments with the border control post. Do not assume that a dry product qualifies for the low-risk route. Ask the border control post to confirm the paperwork for the actual process and origin.

Farmed fishery products from China require an additional official residue-test declaration. The testing covers chloramphenicol, nitrofuran and its metabolites, plus malachite green, crystal violet and their metabolites for aquaculture products. The declaration must include the test results. Arrange this with the supplier and confirm the document with your broker before dispatch.

For an organic order from China into Great Britain, obtain a certificate of inspection for each consignment and check the exporter’s control body and exporting country against the organic registers. Your importing business must also be certified by an approved UK organic control body. Settle this before approving organic packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative hypothetical order: 2 tonnes of dried unsalted Pacific cod skins under 0305 79 00 39, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 12% is £2,100. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £19,600, so it is £3,920. Import taxes total £6,020; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,100 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity and documents: match the species, factory approval, batch description and applicable health, catch and residue-test documents to the invoice and packing list.

Drying and condition: inspect opened packs for mould, insects, damp patches, rancid odour, retained scales and flesh remnants. Compare moisture and salt results with the agreed specification.

Size and performance: compare sheet thickness, cut size and broken pieces with the approved sample. Trial the buyer’s intended soaking, cooking or frying method to check texture and usable yield.

Packs and labels: check seals, punctures, net weight and batch matching. For retail packs, check English labelling, fish allergen information, storage instructions and the UK address against the agreed artwork.

What goes wrong

Uneven drying leaves damp folds inside apparently dry sheets. Packs can contain scales, excess flesh, mixed thicknesses or too many fragments. Moisture ingress and rancid odour can make stock unsuitable for the buyer’s intended use. Keep representative samples and compare arrival condition with the pre-shipment inspection.

A supplier may describe farmed skins as wild-caught, or provide documents for a different species or factory. This changes the paperwork check. Resolve discrepancies before loading, and keep suspect arrival stock separate while investigating. Use factory verification to check the producer and quality inspection to agree the physical checks.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dried fish skins from China?

The relevant dried edible fish offal lines in the supplied tariff facts carry 12% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Confirm the exact species and process before declaring the code.

Do dried fish skins need a health certificate?

Medium-risk fishery products do. Confirm the documentation for low-risk consignments and the risk category with the border control post; drying alone is not a basis for assuming the low-risk route.

Do farmed fish skins need a catch certificate?

Ask your customs broker to confirm whether the farmed product is exempt from the catch-certificate scheme. Chinese aquaculture fishery products still require the applicable border paperwork and an official residue-test declaration containing the test results.

What should I specify when buying dried fish skins?

Specify species, wild or farmed origin, thickness, cut size, scale removal, flesh remnants, moisture, salt, broken pieces and packaging. Trial the intended soaking, cooking or frying method against an approved sample.
