Sourcing dressed muskrat furskins from China

Dressed muskrat furskins from China carry 0% to 2% UK duty, depending on whether they are whole, unassembled pieces or assembled skins. Confirm species, animal origin and the applicable import certification before shipment; a zero duty rate does not settle import restrictions. Cambridge China Bridge sources dressed muskrat furskins.

Duty depends on whether the skins are assembled

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, heading 4302 covers tanned or dressed furskins, including pieces, unassembled or assembled without other materials. Whole muskrat skins under 4302 19 15 00 and unassembled pieces under 4302 20 00 00 carry 0% duty from China. Dropped skins and other assembled muskrat skins carry 2%. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, or suspension, for these lines.

The tariff attaches restrictions on entry into free circulation and CITES import and export controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the actual species and origin, including trapping-origin certification. HMRC says furs without acceptable certification should be detained. CITES permits depend on species listing. Pieces and assembled lines also carry seal controls, and some carry cat and dog fur controls; confirm any prohibition on cat and dog fur and any exceptions for seal products with your customs broker.

The pieces line also attaches waste import and export controls. Confirm with your broker whether the consignment is waste and which requirements apply. For notified waste imports into England, the exporter must seek consent from the dispatch-country authority. Confirm the commodity code using species, dressing, assembly and added materials. See the wider furskins guide for other species and finished articles.

Specify muskrat skins for the intended cutting pattern

Write down the species, the country where the animals originated, and whether they were captive-bred or wild-caught. Keep this separate from the location of the Chinese dressing factory. Ask your broker what documents support the declared source. HMRC guidance says the trapping control does not apply to animals born and bred in captivity.

Agree usable skin dimensions, grade, natural or dyed colour, guard-hair length, underfur density and leather softness. State whether skins should retain heads, tails or paws. Mark acceptable holes, repairs and thin patches against an approved sample. For assembled panels, agree seam layout, hair direction and usable panel shape.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 300 whole dressed muskrat skins under 4302 19 15 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,500, so it is £1,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare species and origin documents with the supplied lot; arrange independent species testing where identification is uncertain.

Hair: check shedding, bald patches, guard-hair breakage and underfur density against the approved sample.

Leather: flex the dressed skin and check stiffness, tears, greasy areas, odour and repairs; measure usable area rather than the outline alone.

Colour and assembly: check dye rub-off, shade matching, hair direction and joins in panels. Record findings using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A supplier may describe the dressing location as the animal's origin, leaving the source unclear. Mixed species, incomplete documents and an invoice that says only 'fur skins' make checks harder. Resolve these points before shipment and keep the lot identifiable through dressing, packing and inspection.

Skins can match the sample's colour but differ in usable area, softness or shedding. Panels may hide repairs inside joins or combine mismatched shades. Approve representative skins and panels, then inspect the shipment against the same defect descriptions and cutting requirements.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dressed muskrat skins from China?

Whole skins and unassembled pieces carry 0%; dropped skins and other assembled muskrat skins carry 2%. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.

Does zero duty mean muskrat skins can clear customs without checks?

No. The tariff attaches entry restrictions and CITES controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm the species, source and applicable certification for the shipment.

What should I check when muskrat skins arrive?

Check species documents, usable dimensions, shedding, leather softness, holes, repairs, odour and dye rub-off. For panels, also check seams, hair direction and shade matching.

Do textiles made with muskrat fur need an animal-origin label?

For textile products containing non-textile parts of animal origin, confirm with the relevant product labelling authority whether the wording 'Contains non-textile parts of animal origin' is required. Agree the finished product's labels before production.
