Sourcing dragline excavators from China
Base UK duty is 0%. In-scope tracked machines also face 18.81% to 40.08% anti-dumping duty and 0% to 2.98% countervailing duty. Confirm with the relevant authority which marking, declaration of conformity and English-instruction requirements apply to new draglines sold in Great Britain. Check operating weight and rope machinery before shipment. Cambridge China Bridge sources dragline excavators.

Dragline classification and UK duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8429 covers self-propelled earthmoving machinery. For draglines with a 360° revolving superstructure, the supplied lines distinguish track-laying excavators under 8429 52 10 00 from other machines under 8429 52 90 00. The table repeats the tracked code by operating-weight band. Confirm propulsion, rotation and supplied configuration using finding your commodity code. See the wider excavator guide for the heading's broader coverage. For walking models, see our walking excavator sourcing guide.
Both lines show 0% base customs duty for China and no suspensions. The tracked line's anti-dumping and countervailing fields are blank, which does not establish exemption. The reference guide and official notices identify additional duties for tracked excavators weighing 11,000 kg or more but less than 80,000 kg: 18.81% to 40.08% anti-dumping and 0% to 2.98% countervailing duty. Machines below or above that band are excluded from those measures. Confirm the producer and invoice conditions with your customs broker.
The supplied tracked line attaches anti-dumping or countervailing registration. The official registration notice covers Chinese tracked excavators in that weight band from 16 July 2026. Importers must enter the relevant additional code on their import declaration; ask your broker to confirm it for the actual producer and machine. The other revolving-machine line lists no trade remedies or controls. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracked dragline excavators below 11,000 kg operating weight | 8429 52 10 00 | 0% | See the tariff |
| Other self-propelled dragline excavators with a fully revolving superstructure | 8429 52 90 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the boom, ropes and drag bucket
Specify the material to be excavated, working reach, digging depth, boom arrangement, bucket capacity and expected bucket load. Record the hoist and drag rope construction, diameter, terminations, drum arrangement, sheave grooves and brake system. Agree the bucket teeth, drag chains, dump mechanism, counterweight, ground conditions and transport configuration. Require a drawing showing the complete working arrangement.
Confirm with the relevant authority which marking, declaration of conformity and English-instruction requirements apply to new machinery placed on the Great Britain market. Request conformity assessment and supporting technical documents for the actual boom, bucket and drive configuration through testing and certification. For combustion-engined machines, check engine type approval and approval markings. Request the earthmoving machine's noise documentation, as the site's existing machinery guidance explains.
Agree a witnessed digging cycle with suitable material, including hoisting, dragging, slewing and controlled bucket discharge. Specify the checks for brakes and emergency controls against the manufacturer's instructions. Ask for identifiable replacement ropes, sheaves, brake linings and bucket wear parts, with an assembly manual for any equipment removed for transport.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: One non-tracked, self-propelled dragline excavator for a contractor; illustrative only under 8429 52 90 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £65,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £65,000, so it is £13,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Boom and bucket: check boom members, welds, pins, pendants and bucket rigging against the approved drawings. Record deformation, missing fasteners and transport damage before assembly.
Ropes and drums: inspect rope condition, terminations, reeving, sheave alignment and drum spooling. Check for rubbing, damaged strands and mismatched rope or sheave specifications.
Working cycle: witness digging and discharge, test hoist, drag and slew brakes using the manufacturer's procedure, and record rope slip, uneven winding and uncontrolled movement.
Identity and arrival: match machine and engine plates, operating-weight evidence, declaration and English instructions to the order during quality inspection. Repeat condition checks on arrival and reconcile dismantled components with the packing list.

What goes wrong
A quotation may describe the carrier while leaving the dragline boom, bucket rigging or rope system undefined. Incorrect reeving, unsuitable sheave grooves or poorly adjusted brakes can appear only during a working cycle. Make acceptance depend on the agreed assembly drawings and a recorded digging test, rather than an unloaded demonstration.
Another risk is treating the snapshot's blank remedy fields as proof that a tracked machine has no additional duty. Confirm operating weight in the supplied configuration and the producer's identity before agreeing the landed cost. Documents for a different engine or boom arrangement, and missing rigging components after transport, also need resolving before acceptance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on dragline excavators from China?
The supplied lines show 0% base duty. In-scope tracked machines also face 18.81% to 40.08% anti-dumping and 0% to 2.98% countervailing duty under the official notices. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Which commodity code covers a dragline excavator?
For self-propelled machines with a fully revolving superstructure, check 8429 52 10 00 for tracked excavators and 8429 52 90 00 for other machines. Confirm the actual configuration with your customs broker.
Does a Chinese dragline need CE or UKCA marking?
Match the documents to the actual machine, boom and bucket configuration.
What should I check before a dragline ships?
Check boom and bucket rigging, ropes, sheaves, drum spooling and brakes. Witness digging and discharge with suitable material, then match the machine identity and dismantled transport components to the documents.
