Sourcing food waste disposers from China

Domestic food waste disposers provisionally classified as other appliances under heading 8509 carry 2% UK duty from China, with no duty variation in the supplied lines. Confirm applicable electrical equipment safety rules for mains models with the relevant authority; check the exact configuration and sink connections. Cambridge China Bridge sources domestic food waste disposers.

UK duty on domestic food waste disposers

Heading 8509 covers domestic electromechanical appliances with a self-contained motor, excluding vacuum cleaners. For sink-mounted food waste disposers, use the other-appliances line as a classification starting point. The table shows product variants sharing that line and a separate parts line, rather than distinct tariff classifications for each feed type.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, all supplied lines carried 2% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The other-appliances line attaches an import control for fluorinated greenhouse gases. Ask the factory about gas content and confirm the applicable declaration with your customs broker. Equipment containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market.

Confirm the commodity code using the operating description, domestic intended use and details of any separately supplied parts. Do not choose the food-grinder line simply because the disposer grinds food waste.

Specify the sink connection and grinding assembly

Specify continuous or batch feeding, motor rating, grinding chamber material, mounting assembly, sink flange, outlet connection and dishwasher inlet. Provide drawings of the intended sink and waste pipe connections. Agree the supplied switch, splash guard, stopper, seals and mounting hardware, plus access for jam clearing and servicing.

Lock the motor, thermal protection, switch, cable and plug to the configuration covered by the safety reports. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the mains model falls within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations and what technical documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer details are needed. Electrical equipment must also meet applicable electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance requirements. Importers must ensure easily understandable English instructions accompany the equipment.

Agree a food-waste test mixture, water flow and acceptance criteria for grinding, draining, noise, vibration and leakage before approving the sample. Use the wider small-appliance guide for component control. Commercial electrical-equipment importers must register annually as producers under electrical-waste responsibilities.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 domestic food waste disposers under 8509 80 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,600. Duty at 2% is £212. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,812, so it is £2,162.40. Import taxes total £2,374.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £212 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fittings: assemble sampled units with the agreed sink flange, mounting ring and outlet fittings; check seals, dishwasher inlet closure and under-sink clearance.

Operation: compare grinding and drainage with the approved sample using the agreed waste mixture; investigate stalling, excessive vibration and residual material.

Protection: have a competent tester verify the agreed overload protection, reset operation and any batch-feed interlock; compare electrical test records with sampled units.

Arrival: check for cracked housings, dented chambers, damaged threads and missing hardware; match rating labels, importer details, English instructions and model identifiers to the approved documents.

What goes wrong

A changed sink flange or outlet fitting can prevent installation even when the motor works. Poor seals cause leaks, and loose mounting hardware transfers vibration to the sink. Keep an assembled reference sample and require approval before changes to fittings or materials.

A substituted motor or switch can leave the delivered configuration outside the supporting test report. Instructions that omit jam clearing, reset operation or inlet preparation also create avoidable returns. Hold affected stock for investigation and compare the delivered assembly with the approved sample before accepting replacements.
