Disposable nonwoven patient gowns from China carry 12% base UK duty, with a conditional 0.00% suspension on the surgical-gown line. 12% base duty, conditional surgical-use suspension

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6210 covers garments made from felt, nonwovens and specified coated or treated fabrics. For disposable nonwoven patient gowns, distinguish other nonwoven garments under 6210 10 98 00 from single-use gowns of a kind used by patients or surgeons during surgical procedures under 6210 10 92 00. The coated woven alternatives in the table are classification comparisons.

Both nonwoven lines carry 12% base duty for goods from China. The surgical-gown line lists a conditional 0.00% suspension for protective garments for surgical or medical use made from felt or nonwovens, including specified coated or laminated constructions. No suspension is listed for 6210 10 98 00. The comparison lines also have conditional medical protective-garment suspensions. The supplied facts list no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or attached import controls for these lines.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual fabric construction and intended use, and ask your customs broker to check suspension eligibility before declaring relief. A patient-gown description alone does not establish eligibility. See the nonwoven isolation gown guide for the wider heading context.

Specify patient coverage and clinical access

State whether the gown provides modesty during examinations, is intended for surgical procedures, or carries protective claims. Hospital use alone does not establish medical-device status. Ask the manufacturer to document the intended purpose before agreeing claims, packaging and supporting documents.

Specify fibre composition, nonwoven construction, fabric weight, opacity, softness, gown length, sleeve opening, neck closure, tie position and back overlap. Agree a size chart and demonstrate sitting, standing and examination access with the approved sample. State whether packs are individual and whether the supplied gown is sterile or non-sterile.

For a gown classified as a medical device for Great Britain, registration with the medicines and healthcare products regulator is required, and a manufacturer outside the UK must appoint a UK responsible person. The UKCA route requires conformity assessment. Use testing and certification to check the proposed route and documents against the exact gown.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 1,000 disposable nonwoven patient gowns; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 6210 10 98 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,800. Duty at 12% is £816. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,616, so it is £1,523.20. Import taxes total £2,339.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £816 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Coverage: measure length and back overlap against the size chart; check modesty when the wearer sits, bends and moves onto an examination couch.

Fabric: compare weight, construction and softness with the approved sample; check opacity under the intended lighting and inspect for thin patches, holes and loose fibres.

Ties and seams: pull ties at their attachment points, inspect neck and sleeve joins, and check that opening the gown does not tear the surrounding fabric.

Packing and identity: check cleanliness, pack seals, size descriptions and agreed batch identification; match any sterile claim to the supporting documents. Arrange quality inspection against the approved sample.

What goes wrong

Lighter fabric can become translucent under examination-room lighting. Insufficient back overlap exposes the patient when seated, while short ties or weak attachment points make the gown difficult to secure. A sample tried only while standing can miss these problems.

A supplier may substitute a general patient gown for a surgical-use model or provide documents for a different construction. That changes the basis for both product acceptance and tariff classification. Consumer gowns should only be sold after product safety compliance has been demonstrated. Agree the intended use and acceptance checks before comparing quotations.
