Sourcing dishwasher rinse aid from China

Dishwasher rinse aid from China normally carries 4% UK duty. A restricted bulk surface-active suspension can give 0%, but eligibility needs checking. For Great Britain, detergent rules apply and hazardous formulations need compliant hazard labels and packaging. Cambridge China Bridge sources dishwasher rinse aid.

Rinse-aid duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 3402 covers organic surface-active agents and washing, cleaning and auxiliary washing preparations. The table shows possible retail and bulk preparation lines for dishwasher rinse aid, rather than interchangeable codes. Confirm the formulation, intended use and presentation through our commodity-code guide.

The listed lines have a standard Chinese-origin duty of 4%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures recorded. A restricted 0.00 % suspension appears on 3402 90 10 90. Its conditions concern specified preparations and exclude mixtures or products containing them, so do not assume an ordinary rinse aid qualifies. No suspension appears on the other table lines.

No import controls are recorded against these finished-preparation lines. Elsewhere in the heading, surfactant lines carry waste import and export controls. Waste shipment controls apply only to waste. If sourcing discarded material from China into England under notification controls, the exporter must seek consent through the dispatch authority. Confirm applicability with your customs broker. For the wider product family, see dishwasher detergent tablets.

Specify drying performance and dispenser compatibility

Specify domestic or commercial dishwasher use, ready-to-use or concentrated formulation, dosing method, water hardness and rinse conditions. Agree acceptance criteria for water spotting, streaks, drying and foam using the buyer's machine and detergent. Include acidity, viscosity, fragrance, colour, storage stability, bottle neck, closure and dispenser connection. Approve a sample before fixing the production formulation.

For sale in Great Britain, rinse aid falls within detergent rules. Detergent labels must provide information in English; hazardous detergents also need compliant hazard labelling and packaging. Check ingredient-label and consumer ingredient-website arrangements with the supplier. Assess UK REACH registration for constituent substances by annual imported quantity, rather than registering the mixture itself.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A palletised shipment of retail dishwasher rinse-aid bottles for a small distributor, assuming this classification (illustrative) under 3402 50 90 00, invoiced at £6,440 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £8,640. Duty at 4% is £345.60. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,985.60, so it is £1,797.12. Import taxes total £2,142.72; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £345.60 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Performance: test production samples at the agreed dose with the intended detergent, water and dishwasher; compare spotting, streaks, drying and foam against the approved sample.

Formulation: compare appearance, acidity, viscosity and storage stability with the specification; ask for surfactant biodegradability evidence and check that documents identify the supplied formulation.

Packaging: check fill quantity, seals, leakage, bottle necks and dispenser connections; inspect cartons for wet patches and damaged closures.

Documents: check English label artwork and ingredient information against the formulation. Hazardous rinse aid supplied for workplace use needs a safety data sheet; check that it matches the batch formulation.

What goes wrong

A sample can dry well while production leaves spots or foam because the surfactant blend or concentration changes. A formula tested with different water or detergent may disappoint in the buyer's machine. Leaking caps, unsuitable dispenser connections and separation after storage are further reasons to test the complete packed product.

Hold the formulation and packaging to the approved specification, retain batch samples and resolve discrepancies before release. A retail bottle and a bulk refill do not automatically share a commodity code or suspension entitlement. Use our inspection guide to set the checks before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dishwasher rinse aid from China?

The relevant preparation lines carry 4% standard duty. A restricted 0.00 % suspension is recorded on 3402 90 10 90; eligibility depends on its conditions and the formulation.

Can the Chinese factory's label be used in Great Britain?

Check it before printing. Detergent label information must be in English, and hazardous formulations also need compliant hazard labelling and packaging.

How do I check that rinse aid works in my dishwasher?

Trial it with your machine, detergent and water at the agreed dose. Compare drying, spotting, streaks and foam with the approved sample, then repeat with production samples.

Does commercial dishwasher rinse aid need a safety data sheet?

Yes, if it is hazardous and supplied for use at work. Check that the safety data sheet describes the actual formulation; it does not replace a performance trial.
