Duty on diesel passenger cars
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the diesel-only passenger-car lines within heading 8703 carry 10% duty for goods from China. Classification separates new and used vehicles and engine capacity. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed. The 0.00 % autonomous suspension applies only to ambulances, not ordinary passenger cars.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls, and waste import controls to the used-car lines. Air-conditioning equipment within vehicles can fall within pre-charged equipment guidance. Obtain the refrigerant type and charge, and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable China-to-GB requirements. For used vehicles, confirm waste status and the waste import requirement with the broker before shipment.
Confirm the engine capacity, diesel-only powertrain and new or used status using finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see petrol passenger cars. Budget import VAT separately using the import duty and VAT guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| New diesel passenger cars, engine capacity not exceeding 1 500 cm³ | 8703 31 10 00 | 10% | None |
| Used diesel passenger cars, engine capacity not exceeding 1 500 cm³ | 8703 31 90 00 | 10% | None |
| New diesel passenger cars, over 1 500 but not exceeding 2 500 cm³ | 8703 32 19 00 | 10% | None |
| Used diesel passenger cars, over 1 500 but not exceeding 2 500 cm³ | 8703 32 90 00 | 10% | None |
| New diesel passenger cars, engine capacity exceeding 2 500 cm³ | 8703 33 19 00 | 10% | None |
| Used diesel passenger cars, engine capacity exceeding 2 500 cm³ | 8703 33 90 00 | 10% | None |
Specify the diesel engine and approval variant
Put the engine model, displacement, transmission, steering position and exact trim in the purchase specification. Identify the fitted exhaust after-treatment equipment, including the particulate filter and any reagent system. Ask for emissions documentation matching that engine and vehicle variant, rather than a certificate for another model.
Confirm the approval route before ordering. Vehicle approval demonstrates compliance with safety and environmental standards. Ask who supplies the approval documents, spare filters, diagnostic access and warranty repairs. Business importers of passenger cars must register with Defra under the end-of-life vehicle scheme.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 new diesel passenger cars for a dealer, illustrative only under 8703 32 19 00, invoiced at £400,000 free on board, with £16,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £416,000. Duty at 10% is £41,600. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £457,600, so it is £91,520. Import taxes total £133,120; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £41,600 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the chassis and engine identifiers to the invoice, vehicle records and approval documents.
Diesel system: inspect a cold start, warning lamps, fluid leaks and diagnostic fault records; check that the specified exhaust after-treatment equipment is present.
UK specification: check steering position, headlamp configuration, speedometer display, seat belts and supplied manuals against the agreed specification.
Arrival condition: compare bodywork, underbody, tyres, mileage, keys and battery condition with the pre-shipment record. Use a documented quality inspection.

What goes wrong
An approval document for a similar model may leave the ordered engine or trim unsupported. Removed emissions equipment, unresolved warning lamps, undocumented repairs and missing diagnostic access can make a vehicle unsuitable for the intended sale. Require matching documents and a recorded inspection before releasing the shipment.
Do not treat a dismantling vehicle as ordinary used-car stock: a vehicle being dismantled for parts is waste. The tariff's waste control needs a separate check for the actual vehicle and destination. Agree parts availability and the repair process before ordering, rather than discovering support gaps after arrival.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on diesel cars from China?
The listed new and used diesel passenger-car lines carry 10% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The suspension is restricted to ambulances. Import VAT is separate.
Can I register a diesel car imported from China?
Confirm the applicable approval route before ordering. Vehicle approval shows that the car meets safety and environmental standards; the documents must match the vehicle you buy.
What should I ask about diesel emissions equipment?
Ask for the exact engine variant, emissions documentation, fitted particulate filter and any reagent system. Agree diagnostic access and check warning lamps and fault records during inspection.
Do used diesel cars have extra import controls?
The tariff attaches waste import controls to the used-car lines. Confirm the vehicle's waste status and applicable requirement with your customs broker. Also check the air-conditioning refrigerant control.
