Sourcing depository safes from China

Depository safes from China carry a flat 2% UK duty, with no trade remedies listed in the supplied tariff snapshot. Models intended for or likely to be used by consumers must meet the applicable product safety rules. Specify the deposit mechanism and check retrieval protection separately from the main door. Cambridge China Bridge sources depository safes.

2% UK import duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8303 covers armoured or reinforced safes, strongboxes, safe doors and deposit lockers, together with cash or deed boxes of base metal. Armoured or reinforced depository safes fall within 8303 00 40 00. The table shows deposit designs sharing that tariff line, rather than separate commodity codes.

The supplied snapshot records 2% duty for goods from China on both heading lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions, steel measures or attached import controls. The duty range is therefore a flat 2%. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the construction and intended function before choosing the commodity code. A simple cash box should not be described as an armoured safe merely because it has a deposit opening. See the safes and cash boxes guide for the wider heading.

Deposit openings, retrieval protection and locks

Specify the largest cash bag or envelope to be deposited, the opening dimensions, usable collection space and deposit mechanism. Agree how the chute or internal baffles prevent items being pulled back through the opening. Test the sample with your actual bags, including bulky deposits, and check whether material can lodge above the collection compartment.

Specify body and door construction, locking bolts, hinges, anchoring points and the lock model. Agree who can deposit and who can open the collection compartment, including key control and override procedures. Where insurance cover matters, obtain model-matched independent certification and ask your insurer to confirm acceptance of the complete deposit design. Fire resistance is assessed separately from security.

In Great Britain, the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 apply to products intended for or likely, under reasonably foreseeable conditions, to be used by consumers. Consumer-use safes must be safe, and products should only be sold once compliance has been demonstrated appropriately. Include checks for sharp deposit edges, finger trapping and stability in the product assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 compact slot depository safes for a business distributor under 8303 00 40 00, invoiced at £45,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £50,000. Duty at 2% is £1,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £51,000, so it is £10,200. Import taxes total £11,200; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Deposit function: use the agreed bags and envelopes to check entry, discharge and collection; check for jams and attempts to retrieve deposited items through the opening.

Construction: compare steel thickness, welds, baffles, door fit, bolts and anchoring holes with the approved drawings and sample.

Locks and evidence: test locking, unlocking and agreed override procedures; match the supplied model and lock to any claimed certification.

Arrival condition: inspect pallet restraint, crushed packaging, corrosion and door distortion; repeat deposit and lock checks after unpacking. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

A deposit opening can accept an envelope but leave it caught in the chute, or allow deposited bags to be pulled back out. A secure main door does not establish how well the deposit mechanism protects the contents. Request evidence for the complete model and demonstrate the deposit function on the approved sample.

Production changes can weaken baffles, welds or locking bolts. Poor restraint during transport can distort the door and jam the lock. Record the agreed construction, inspect it before shipment and repeat functional checks on arrival before distributing the safes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on depository safes from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 2% for armoured or reinforced depository safes under 8303 00 40 00, with no listed trade remedies.

Is a depository safe the same as a safe deposit locker?

A depository safe receives deposits through an opening while the collection door stays locked. A safe deposit locker provides a separately locked compartment. Specify which function you need.

Will a certified safe door prove the deposit mechanism is secure?

Ask for evidence matching the complete depository-safe model, including its deposit mechanism. Confirm your insurer accepts that configuration before relying on a claimed grade.

What should I test on a depository-safe sample?

Use your actual bags and envelopes. Check deposit clearance, jams, retrieval through the opening, collection-door operation, locking and anchoring positions.
