Denture cleaning tablets: 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3306 covers oral or dental hygiene preparations, denture fixatives and retail dental floss. Denture cleaning tablets fall within the other-preparations line, 3306 90 00 00, carrying 0% duty from China. The wider heading ranges from 0% to 4%, with the higher rate applying to floss. The table shows buying variants of the same commodity line.

The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. It attaches an export control of mercury. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether that measure has any bearing on the proposed shipment from China; do not treat its presence as a confirmed import requirement for ordinary denture cleaning tablets.

Confirm the formula, intended use and presentation against the commodity-code guide before declaring the goods. The denture adhesives guide covers another product family within this heading.

Specify the cleaning formula and intended use

Specify the complete formula, tablet mass, fragrance, water volume and temperature, soaking time and rinsing instructions. Identify the denture materials covered by the product, including acrylic and any metal components. Agree dissolution, stain-removal and material-compatibility tests using the finished tablet and retail packaging.

Settle the claims before approving artwork. Official guidance says products intended to disinfect may fall under biocide, medical-device or medicinal-product rules, depending on intended purpose, composition and claims. HSE's disinfectant product types exclude cleaning products without an intended biocidal effect. Have the proposed formula and wording reviewed through testing and certification.

If the tablets are medical devices for the Great Britain market, registration is needed before sale, the overseas manufacturer must appoint a UK responsible person, and relevant marking and conformity assessment requirements apply. For a formulation within the scope of chemical classification rules, substances and mixtures placed on the Great Britain market must be classified and labelled accordingly.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 100,000 denture cleaning tablets; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 3306 90 00 00, invoiced at £26,000 free on board, with £2,400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £28,400, so it is £5,680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Tablets: check mass against the agreed specification, broken edges, powder, sticking and consistency between batches. Compare dissolution and visible residue with the approved sample under the stated use conditions.

Cleaning and compatibility: check stain removal on the agreed denture materials. Look for discolouration, surface changes and damage to metal components after repeated use.

Moisture protection: check individual seals, blister integrity or container closures. Compare retained samples in final packaging for softening, swelling and changes in dissolution during storage.

Instructions and identity: check soaking and rinsing wording, batch identity, declared contents and artwork against the approved version. Match any disinfection claim to the reviewed intended use and supporting test report.

What goes wrong

Moisture entering the pack can leave tablets soft, swollen or slow to dissolve. A change in tablet compression can alter dissolution, while a formula that removes stains from acrylic may affect metal components. Test the finished formulation in its final packaging rather than relying on a loose factory sample.

Adding a disinfection claim after testing creates a mismatch between the product brief, evidence and regulatory assessment. Keep formula, instructions, claims and test reports together, and review proposed changes before accepting a repeat batch.
