Sourcing dental X-ray machines from China

Dental X-ray machines and relevant tubes and parts from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected lines. Dental diagnostic machines need medical device conformity marking and registration before sale in Great Britain; dental practices using them require radiation registration. Cambridge China Bridge sources dental X-ray machines.

Dental X-ray machines: 0% duty

Heading 9022 covers X-ray apparatus, tubes and associated parts. Ordinary dental X-ray apparatus falls under 9022 13 00 00; computed tomography has its own line, 9022 12 00 00. This guide covers dental machines and their relevant components. See the wider X-ray equipment guide for other applications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 19 October 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is separate from customs duty; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code against the machine's imaging method and intended use. Describe replacement tubes and parts separately rather than assuming that every item supplied with a dental imaging system shares the machine's code.

Specify the imaging system and compliance file

State whether you need intraoral, panoramic or cone-beam computed tomography imaging. Specify fixed or handheld construction, exposure settings, positioning aids, sensor compatibility, image export, English software and licences. Agree mounting details, power supply, installation, calibration, spare tubes and local service support before ordering.

Dental diagnostic machines are medical devices and need registration with the medicines and healthcare products regulator before placement on the Great Britain market. Confirm the accepted UKCA or CE conformity route, any requirement for the Chinese manufacturer to appoint a UK Responsible Person, and the process for notifying import intentions and submitting importer details with that regulator.

Dental practices using X-rays require registration with the Health and Safety Executive for radiation generators. Radiation risk assessment, radiation protection advice and medical exposure rules also apply, as described in the site's wider guide. Have the buyer's radiation protection adviser review shielding, warning systems and the proposed installation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 4 wall-mounted intraoral dental X-ray machines; illustrative order, not a quotation under 9022 13 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the machine, tube, serial markings, declaration and conformity documents to the ordered model; check English instructions and agreed accessories.

Imaging: use an agreed test object to check image consistency, positioning, sensor connection, exposure controls and image export without exposing a patient.

Radiation: obtain the leakage survey and check warning indicators, exposure switches and any specified interlocks with the buyer's radiation protection adviser.

Arrival: check packing damage, tube-head security, arm movement, mounting hardware and cables. Confirm installation, calibration and service arrangements before clinical use.

What goes wrong

A machine may arrive with a sensor interface that does not work with the practice's software, an arm that drifts during positioning or image artefacts after transport. Specify an acceptance test for the supplied hardware and software combination, and inspect tube heads and detectors for transit damage.

Documents for a different model, missing English instructions and unresolved service support can prevent acceptance. Separate the supplier's factory test from installation checks at the dental practice. Agree who supplies replacement tubes, diagnoses software faults and performs calibration.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dental X-ray machines from China?

The selected dental apparatus, computed tomography, tube and parts lines carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff data. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded for those lines.

Can I sell a Chinese dental X-ray machine in Great Britain?

It needs registration with the medicines and healthcare products regulator before market placement. Confirm the accepted medical device conformity route and any requirement for the Chinese manufacturer to appoint a UK Responsible Person with that regulator.

Does a dental practice need radiation registration?

Yes. The Health and Safety Executive says dentists and dental practices using X-rays require registration for radiation generators, rather than consent.

What should I check before accepting a dental X-ray machine?

Check model-specific documents, leakage survey, imaging tests, arm stability, sensor and software compatibility, English instructions and installation support. Agree replacement tube and calibration arrangements.
