Dental tariff lines carry 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, the dental lines shown carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached tariff controls on these dental lines. Heading 9018 covers medical, surgical, dental and veterinary instruments and appliances.

The table separates dental drill engines, other dental instruments and rotary accessories. The accessory code appears separately for burrs and drills, and for discs and brushes. Do not assume a handpiece, motor and accessory set share the same classification. Confirm the commodity code using the complete product description and supplied configuration.

This guide concerns dental handpieces supplied for Great Britain. For the wider heading and medical device background, see medical instruments and devices. A duty-free tariff line does not replace medical device conformity assessment or registration.

Specify the handpiece and its coupling

Specify air turbine or motor-driven operation, straight or contra-angle form, coupling geometry, light source, spray arrangement and compatible burs. Agree operating pressure, speed, torque, chuck retention and run-out against the manufacturer's documented specification. Identify whether the coupling and motor are included.

For reusable models, obtain the cleaning, lubrication and sterilisation instructions and supporting validation for the exact model. Agree replacement cartridge availability and the method for checking performance after reprocessing. Compare the supplied model designation with the declaration of conformity and any applicable conformity assessment certificate.

Manufacturers must meet the relevant medical device marking and conformity assessment requirements. The device must be registered with the MHRA before placement on the Great Britain market. Confirm with the MHRA whether the overseas manufacturer needs a UK Responsible Person and how importer details should be notified and submitted.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of dental handpieces, subject to confirmation of classification under 9018 49 90 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Connection: fit samples to the intended coupling and motor; check locking, air and water connections, leakage and light operation.

Rotation: check chuck grip, bur release, vibration and run-out against the agreed specification using suitable test equipment.

Spray and reprocessing: check spray coverage and blocked outlets; test reusable samples after the documented cleaning and sterilisation process.

Identity and packing: match model and batch markings, instructions and supplied accessories to the order and conformity documents; inspect for corrosion, dents and damaged packaging.

What goes wrong

A coupling described as compatible may lock onto the chair but leak or fail to provide light. Poor chuck retention, excessive vibration, blocked spray outlets and cartridges that deteriorate after reprocessing are useful rejection checks. Record acceptance criteria before ordering and compare production samples with the approved sample.

A certificate for a different model leaves the buyer unable to match the shipment to its documentation. Request documents before payment, then inspect the actual model and markings before shipment. Use testing and certification to plan document and test checks.
