Dental floss duty: 4%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 19 October 2026, dental floss under 3306 20 00 00 carried 4% duty on goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed in the supplied tariff record. Heading 3306 includes oral hygiene preparations and dental floss yarn in individual retail packages.

The supplied tariff record attaches an “Export control of mercury” to this line. Confirm its relevance and any declaration requirement with your customs broker. The record alone does not establish an import prohibition for ordinary dental floss.

Confirm the material, presentation and commodity code before shipment, particularly for bulk yarn or floss mounted in holders. The toothpaste and oral care guide covers the wider heading. Only the dental-floss line is shown here because the other supplied lines describe different products.

Specify the yarn, coating and dispenser

Write down the yarn material, round or tape profile, waxed or unwaxed finish, flavour and declared length. Ask for the composition of coatings and flavourings. Approve samples for sliding, fraying, breaking and residue, then retain those samples with the purchase specification.

Specify spool winding, dispensing resistance, cutter attachment, lid closure and retail seal. As a UK importer, you are responsible for consumer safety and applicable labelling requirements. Keep the product specification and safety review together; do not treat a smooth sample as evidence that every production pack matches it.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 100,000 retail packs of dental floss under 3306 20 00 00, invoiced at £26,000 free on board, with £2,400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,400. Duty at 4% is £1,136. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,536, so it is £5,907.20. Import taxes total £7,043.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,136 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Yarn: compare material, profile and finish with the approved sample; check for knots, loose fibres, fraying and breaks during dispensing.

Coating: check for uneven wax, sticky deposits, unexpected odour and flavour differences; match the factory's composition documents to the ordered product.

Dispenser: check winding and smooth payout, cutter security, lid closure and sharp edges accessible during normal handling.

Packing: measure dispensed length against the label, check retail seals and print, and match carton contents and batch references to the packing list.

What goes wrong

A sample can dispense smoothly while production spools snag or unwind inside the case. Changes in yarn or coating can alter sliding and fraying. Loose cutters, lids that open in transit and packs with less floss than declared are useful rejection points to agree before production.

Inspect finished retail packs rather than loose yarn alone. Record defects against the approved specification and keep affected batches separate while the supplier investigates. Keep records identifying your suppliers so that the products' origins can be traced.
