Dental boxing wax duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 3407 covers modelling pastes, dental wax and dental impression compounds in specified presentation forms, and plaster-based dental preparations. This guide concerns wax used to build a retaining wall around an impression before pouring a dental cast. The table shows product formats sharing the same commodity line.

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for goods from China under 3407 00 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is separate; budget for 20%. See UK import duty and VAT.

Give your customs broker the wax composition, intended use, photographs and packaging details to confirm the commodity code. For related dental wax within the wider heading, see dental sticky wax.

Specify the boxing wall and its seal

Specify sheets, strips or rolls, dimensions, thickness, colour, wax composition and pack contents. Agree pliability at the laboratory's working conditions, adhesion to the intended impression material, seam strength and resistance to slumping during pouring. Retain a sample made into a complete boxing wall, rather than approving colour and appearance alone.

Medical-device status depends on the stated intended purpose and mode of action. Obtain the manufacturer's written intended use and supporting documents before ordering. If the product is a medical device for the Great Britain market, it must be registered with MHRA before placement on that market; a manufacturer outside the UK must appoint a UK responsible person.

Ask for formulation information, storage instructions and handling advice for the actual supplied wax. A hazardous chemical supplied for use at work requires a safety data sheet. Agree protective packing that prevents sheets sticking together, rolls flattening and wax becoming contaminated.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 18 cartons of packed dental boxing wax sheets under 3407 00 00 00, invoiced at £2,200 free on board, with £1,168 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,368. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,368, so it is £673.60. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions and condition: check thickness, width, pack contents, cracks, surface contamination and distortion against the approved sample.

Pliability: bend and form delivered samples under the agreed working conditions; check for tearing, spring-back and excessive softening.

Seals and pouring: build a wall on the intended impression material, join the seams and trial the agreed casting process; check leakage, detachment and collapse.

Packing and records: compare the delivered product with its specification, batch identification, intended-use documents and agreed storage instructions during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Boxing wax can look acceptable in a flat sample yet split when curved, peel away from an impression or open at the seam during pouring. A softer production formulation can slump, while a harder formulation can resist shaping. Trial production samples with the buyer's impression material and casting process before accepting the batch.

Warm transport can leave sheets fused together and rolls flattened. Dust or oily surfaces can weaken the seal. Agree separation layers and carton support, retain the approved formulation and investigate substitutions. Resolve any mismatch between the intended-use documents and the product offered before releasing stock.
