12% standard duty, with a 0% suspension

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 0712 covers dried vegetables, whole, cut, sliced, broken or powdered, but not further prepared. Plain dehydrated broccoli falls within 0712 90 90 90. The supplied tariff facts show 12% standard duty and a 0% autonomous suspension for dried broccoli in the listed forms. They record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for this line.

The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing broccoli. The tariff also attaches import control of organic products. For organic broccoli from China entering Great Britain, the importing business needs UK organic certification and the goods need a Great Britain certificate of inspection. Confirm the documents and port arrangements before shipment with your organic control body and customs broker.

The table presents different broccoli forms under the same tariff line, rather than separate commodity codes. Confirm the drying process, ingredients and any further preparation using our commodity code guide. For other products within the heading, see sourcing dried vegetables.

Specify florets, stems and rehydration

Specify air-dried or freeze-dried broccoli, florets or stem pieces, the permitted stem content, cut size and acceptable fines. For powder, agree particle size and confirm whether it contains only broccoli. Record moisture, colour, odour and foreign matter acceptance criteria in the purchase specification. Compare rehydrated samples in the intended soup, sauce or meal before approving production.

Food for human consumption must meet general food safety legal requirements. Confirm food business registration requirements with your local authority and agree batch testing for pesticide residues, sulphites and microbiology. Use the GB pesticide residue requirements described in the wider dried-vegetables guide. Ask the factory to identify additives and processing aids, and agree sealed food-contact liners, storage instructions and lot identification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: 100 kg of plain freeze-dried broccoli florets; FOB value and freight are illustrative whole-pound amounts. under 0712 90 90 90, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £1,290 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,790. Duty at 12% is £454.80. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,244.80, so it is £848.96. Import taxes total £1,303.76; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £454.80 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Cut and colour: compare florets, stems, fines and powder texture with the approved sample; check for yellowing, scorching and excessive breakage.

Moisture and packing: measure moisture against the agreed specification; inspect liners and seals for damage, dampness, clumping and mould on arrival.

Safety and identity: match shipped lot codes to laboratory reports; screen for grit, insects and other foreign matter, and investigate undeclared ingredients in powder.

Labels and records: check the English label artwork, declared net weight, storage instructions, business address and applicable allergen declarations; match organic documents to the product ordered.

What goes wrong

A sample rich in florets can become a shipment dominated by stems and fines. Broccoli can lose colour, develop a burnt odour or remain tough after rehydration. Moisture ingress can cause clumping or mould. Set acceptance criteria against the intended recipe, and inspect samples from different cartons rather than relying on the factory's retained sample.

A blended powder or seasoned product can invalidate the plain-broccoli suspension assumption. Keep the ingredient declaration consistent with the invoice and customs description. Hold disputed lots apart while checking quality and test records. Use quality inspection guidance to agree the sampling and reporting brief before dispatch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
