Duty and controls for crust snakeskins

Heading 4106 covers tanned or crust hides and skins without wool or hair, whether or not split, but not further prepared. This guide concerns dry snake leather awaiting further processing. The supplied tariff facts contain only the reptile lines shown here. See the wider hides and skins guide for other animals.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, vegetable pre-tanned reptile skins under 4106 40 10 00 have 0% duty. Other reptile skins under 4106 40 90 00 have a standard 2% rate and a 0.00 % autonomous suspension. Its footnote excludes mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products. The supplied facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.

Both lines carry CITES import and export controls. For species listed in Annex A, B or C, official guidance requires a permit. Before applying, check both tabs of the official import-restrictions list. Ask your broker to confirm the classification, suspension eligibility and documents for the actual skins. Use finding your commodity code to prepare the classification enquiry.

Specify the snake species and usable cutting area

Ask for the scientific species name, original country of origin, tanning location and batch identity. Record whether the skins are whole or split, the tanning process and the processing still needed. Ask the supplier to identify any coating or finishing already applied.

Agree usable belly width, thickness, cut position, scale pattern and acceptable scars, holes and edge damage. Define how usable area will be measured and graded. Keep an approved sample for handle and flexibility, then trial your intended dyeing, finishing and cutting process before approving bulk material.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative workshop consignment of vegetable pre-tanned crust snakeskins under 4106 40 10 00, invoiced at £4,106 free on board, with £90 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,196. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,196, so it is £839.20. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare batch labels and supplier records with the agreed species, origin and tanning description.

Yield: measure usable cutting width and thickness; mark holes, scars and damaged edges against your cutting templates.

Condition: check for mould, damp packing, brittle areas, tears between scales and excessive scale lifting.

Processing: trial a retained sample through your intended finishing process and compare flexibility and surface appearance with the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A large skin can still give poor cutting yield when its belly is narrow or defects cross the intended panels. Agree the usable area rather than accepting overall dimensions alone. Keep batches separate until their processing performance has been checked.

A description such as “snake leather” leaves the species unresolved. Before arranging shipment, have your broker check the permit documents and ask APHA about any unresolved restrictions or commercial-use permission. Official guidance makes commercial use of Annex A specimens without a valid certificate, or illegally imported Annex B specimens, a criminal offence.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
