Sourcing cotton seersucker fabric from China
Cotton seersucker fabric within heading 5208 pays 8% UK duty across the relevant lines from China. The heading covers woven fabric containing at least 85% cotton and weighing no more than 200 g/m². Fibre labels must show the composition; specify the puckered construction and check it after washing. Cambridge China Bridge sources cotton seersucker fabric.

Duty and classification for cotton seersucker
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 November 2026, heading 5208 covers woven fabrics containing 85% or more cotton by weight and weighing not more than 200 g/m². Seersucker is a product description, so confirm the actual weave, finish, weight and width before selecting a line. The table gives candidate lines rather than a code determined by the name alone.
The relevant seersucker lines carry 8% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on these lines. A separate 4% suspension concerns unbleached fabric for bandages, dressings and medical gauzes, not ordinary seersucker.
Confirm the commodity code using the fabric specification and measured fibre content and weight. For the wider heading, see cotton woven fabrics.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Different-coloured yarns, plain weave, up to 100 g/m² | 5208 41 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Different-coloured yarns, plain weave, over 100 g/m² | 5208 42 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Different-coloured yarns, other woven fabrics | 5208 49 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Dyed plain weave, up to 100 g/m² | 5208 31 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Dyed plain weave, over 100 to 130 g/m², width up to 165 cm | 5208 32 16 00 | 8% | None |
| Dyed other woven fabrics | 5208 39 00 00 | 8% | None |
Specify the puckers, not just the stripe
State fibre composition, yarn count, weave, weight, usable width, stripe repeat and colour references. Ask whether the puckers are woven into the construction or produced by finishing. Approve a washed sample as well as an unwashed cutting, and agree how the texture, width and dimensions should compare after the intended wash.
For sale in Great Britain, textile labels must show fibre content. Match the composition claim to the supplied fabric rather than treating the word cotton as a test result. For dyed fabric, confirm any applicable UK REACH azo dye restrictions and suitable testing with the relevant authority.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 200 metres of yarn-dyed plain-weave cotton seersucker under 5208 42 00 00, invoiced at £2,200 free on board, with £200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,400. Duty at 8% is £192. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,592, so it is £518.40. Import taxes total £710.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £192 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Texture: compare raised and flat bands with the approved sample across the width and along the roll.
Construction: check fibre content, weight, usable width and stripe alignment without stretching the puckers flat.
Washing: check dimensional change, retained puckering and colour fastness against the agreed sample and acceptance criteria.
Roll condition: inspect for missing yarns, oil marks, dampness and shade changes; match roll identities and lengths to the packing list.

What goes wrong
A striped flat fabric can arrive in place of the approved puckered construction. Finishing can also disguise a texture that changes after washing. Compare washed production cuttings with the approved washed sample before accepting the lot.
Uneven puckering changes usable width and makes cutting harder. Bowed stripes, shade differences between rolls and excessive shrinkage can disrupt garment matching. Keep rolls grouped by dye lot and resolve discrepancies before cutting.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on cotton seersucker from China?
The relevant lines within heading 5208 carry 8% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed in the supplied tariff data.
Does all cotton seersucker use the same commodity code?
No. Confirm fibre content, weight, weave, finish and width. The name seersucker alone does not establish the commodity line.
How do I check whether the puckers survive washing?
Wash a production cutting using the agreed care method. Compare its texture, dimensions and usable width with the approved washed sample.
Does cotton seersucker need fibre labelling?
For sale in Great Britain, textile labels must show fibre content. Check that the composition claim matches the fabric supplied.
