Duty on corn husks for weaving

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 1401 covers vegetable materials used primarily for plaiting. Corn husks supplied for basket weaving fall within the description of other plaiting materials under 1401 90 00 00, subject to confirmation of their preparation and use. The supply forms in the table share this commodity line. Its duty on goods from China is 0%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of organic products. Confirm its application to weaving husks from China and any documentation requirement with your customs broker before shipment. The official organic import guidance concerns food, feed and seed; it does not clearly resolve this craft-material case. If you intend to make organic claims, also ask an approved UK organic control body for advice.

Confirm the commodity code using the material, processing and intended use. Finished baskets need classification as finished articles rather than raw weaving material. For the wider heading, see our reed weaving stems guide. Importers must also check whether the exact plant product requires phytosanitary certification for entry into Great Britain.

Specify usable husks, not just dried leaves

Specify maize cob husks rather than stalk leaves, silk or mixed crop residue. Agree whole leaves or prepared strips, usable length and width, colour range, cleanliness, packing weight and acceptable tears. State whether the husks are natural, bleached or dyed, and ask the supplier to disclose drying methods and chemical treatments.

Approve a sample through your actual soaking, twisting and weaving process. Check whether leaves soften evenly, hold together at folds and dry without excessive distortion. For dyed material, check colour transfer onto damp hands, adjacent pale husks and the work surface. Keep the approved sample for comparison with the shipment.

If selling the husks as consumer craft materials, demonstrate compliance with relevant product safety requirements before sale. Assess the intended use separately from the visual grading inspection.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale batch of dried weaving husks packed in cartons for a craft supplier under 1401 90 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,000, so it is £2,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and grading: open cartons from across the batch and compare leaf type, usable dimensions, colour and torn edges with the approved sample.

Condition: inspect inside compressed bundles for dampness, mould, musty odour, insects, soil and retained kernels; record affected cartons.

Weaving performance: repeat the agreed soaking and folding trial with shipment samples; check splitting, weak patches and dye transfer.

Packing and records: check carton weights, crushed leaves and batch identification; match any treatment documents to the supplied lot. Arrange quality inspection around these checks.

What goes wrong

A clean outer layer can conceal damp or discoloured husks inside tightly packed bundles. Mixed leaf grades create waste when narrow, short or torn pieces cannot be used in the intended weave. Excessively brittle material can look acceptable dry and fail during preparation.

Colour variation becomes conspicuous across a finished basket, while dye transfer can stain neighbouring material. Agree rejection criteria and the weaving trial before ordering. Keep suspect cartons separate on arrival and photograph the contents before repacking.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on corn husks from China?

For basket-weaving husks classified under 1401 90 00 00, the supplied tariff data shows 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed.

Do dried corn husks need a phytosanitary certificate?

The tariff attaches an organic-products control. Confirm the requirement for this craft material with your customs broker and seek advice from an approved UK organic control body before using organic claims.

How do I check whether corn husks will weave properly?

Use the shipment samples in your agreed soaking, twisting and folding process. Compare usable leaf size, splitting, colour transfer and the dried weave with the approved sample.
