Cooked duck classification and duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, the supplied cooked-duck lines within heading 1602 carried £2,313 per 1,000 kg on goods from China. They showed no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Heading 1602 covers prepared or preserved meat; distinguish cooked duck from uncooked preparations and duck liver.

The tariff attaches veterinary control and organic-product import control. For Great Britain, confirm country and establishment approval, health certificate and advance notification requirements with your customs broker, and use a border control post designated for the commodity. For organic duck, the certificate of inspection is issued by the exporter's control body; confirm the consignment requirements with your customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using duck type, cooking process and poultry meat or offal content. Do not apply a chicken rate to duck. See the wider cooked chicken and meat products guide. The supplied duck lines have weight-based duties, so none supports the requested percentage-duty worked example.

Specify the duck cut, recipe and cooking process

Specify Pekin duck or another duck type, whole birds or cuts, bone-in or boneless, skin-on or skinless, and the proportions of meat, skin, fat and sauce. Agree seasoning, salt, added water, portion weight and whether the product is ready to eat or intended for further preparation.

China's poultry meat-product certificate covers specific risk-mitigating treatment. Have the exporter confirm the applicable treatment before agreeing the cooking process. Ask for batch cooking records, microbiological results, cooling and freezing records, and agreed storage instructions.

Confirm with the relevant local authority the label requirements for the food name, ingredients with allergens emphasised, net quantity, storage conditions, date marking and the food business's name and UK address. Review the complete sauce recipe as well as the duck meat before approving artwork.

Inspection checklist

Documents: match the establishment, product description, batch identification and health certificate to the shipped duck.

Condition: review temperature records and inspect seals, leaks, thawing signs and damaged packs on arrival.

Yield and weight: weigh sampled packs and compare bone, skin, fat, meat and sauce proportions with the agreed specification.

Cooking and microbiology: review batch cooking and laboratory records; compare texture, flavour and slicing or shredding performance with the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A factory substitutes a different duck type, increases skin or sauce, or supplies cuts with more bone than the sample. The product then gives a different serving yield even when the pack weight matches. Write the cut and composition into the purchase specification and retain an approved sample.

Border problems arise from unapproved establishments or incorrect certificates; arrival problems include broken seals and a cold-chain record that does not match the agreed storage conditions. Check approval before ordering, review certificate drafts before loading and investigate affected batches before release.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on cooked duck meat from China?

The supplied cooked-duck lines carry £2,313 per 1,000 kg, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The duty is weight-based, not a percentage.

Can any Chinese factory supply cooked duck for Great Britain?

Do not assume any factory is eligible. Ask your customs broker to confirm the country and establishment approval requirements for the commodity and the appropriate health certificate for the consignment. Check approval before placing an order.

Is ordinary roasting enough for imported cooked duck?

Do not assume it is. China's poultry meat-product certificate covers specific risk-mitigating treatment. Have the exporter confirm the applicable treatment and provide batch records.

What should I check on cooked duck delivery?

Check documents, temperature records, pack seals, net weight, bone and skin proportions, sauce content and batch cooking and microbiological records against the agreed specification.
