Sourcing canned corned beef from China
Canned corned beef in airtight containers carries a listed UK duty of 16%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. However, Chinese canned corned beef cannot legally be imported into Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge checks whether a product can be imported before any order is placed.

Corned beef duty and the China import prohibition
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 1602 covers other prepared or preserved meat, meat offal, blood or insects. Corned beef in airtight containers is specifically listed under 1602 50 31 00 at 16% for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is shown. The other table rows are neighbouring beef classifications for comparison, rather than alternative codes for the same corned beef.
Chinese canned corned beef cannot legally enter Great Britain. A tariff rate does not grant import permission. The tariff attaches veterinary control, organic-product import control and CITES import and export controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm the veterinary entry document and any applicable CITES requirement. For an organic proposal, confirm inspection certification with your organic control body; the exporter's control body issues the certificate. These arrangements do not remove the beef prohibition.
Confirm the commodity code using the recipe, cooking process and airtight packaging. See the canned luncheon meat guide for the wider heading. The hypothetical order is illustrative arithmetic only and cannot proceed as a China-to-Great-Britain import. Do not assume standard-rate VAT applies to food; the import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation and the need to check the product's VAT treatment.

Specify the beef recipe, retort process and tin
Resolve import eligibility before approving production for Great Britain. For product evaluation, specify beef and offal content, added fat, salt, starch, seasonings and allergens. Agree the cured flavour, meat fibre, slice firmness and fat separation against a retained sample. Record the full formulation rather than accepting a description such as canned meat.
Specify tin shape, net weight, opening method, internal coating, seam acceptance criteria and carton protection. Request heat-processing records and evidence supporting shelf life. Agree storage instructions before and after opening, batch identification and label artwork. These checks help assess a product but do not make Chinese corned beef eligible for import into Great Britain. For canned fish, see our canned mackerel sourcing guide.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale batch of canned corned beef; arithmetic only, not a permitted import from China into Great Britain under 1602 50 31 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £34,000. Duty at 16% is £5,440. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £39,440, so it is £7,888. Import taxes total £13,328; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £5,440 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Eligibility and records: establish the actual manufacturing origin and match the product, recipe and batch markings to the records. Do not arrange a prohibited Chinese beef shipment to Great Britain.
Tin integrity: check seams, swelling, leaks, rust, coating damage and dents near the seam. Isolate suspect tins for investigation.
Contents: for an eligible supply, weigh sampled contents and compare slice firmness, meat fibre, colour and fat separation with the approved specification.
Labels: for an eligible supply, check the food name, ingredients with allergens emphasised, net quantity, date mark, storage instructions and food business name and UK address.

What goes wrong
The buyer mistakes a listed commodity code, a duty quotation or a factory certificate for permission to import. Chinese canned corned beef remains prohibited from entering Great Britain. Confirm eligibility before paying for production or printing packaging.
Product disputes arise when the production recipe contains more fat or starch than the sample, slices crumble, or tins arrive damaged at the seams. Compare batch records with the agreed recipe and investigate swollen or leaking tins before releasing any eligible stock.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on canned corned beef from China?
The listed duty for 1602 50 31 00 is 16%, with no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension shown. Chinese canned corned beef is nevertheless prohibited from entering Great Britain.
Can I import Chinese canned corned beef into Great Britain?
No. Chinese beef products are outside the permitted exceptions to the animal-product prohibition. Canning does not make Chinese corned beef eligible.
Can I use the beef luncheon meat code for corned beef?
Corned beef in airtight containers has its own listed code, 1602 50 31 00. Have your broker check the formulation and processing records rather than choosing a neighbouring code from the product name.
What should I check when corned beef tins arrive?
For an eligible supply, check seams, swelling, leaks, rust, seam-area dents, net weight and batch markings. Compare the contents with the approved sample. These checks do not override an import prohibition.
