Sourcing Contact Tachometers from China

Contact tachometers and their dedicated parts from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines. For electronic models, check whether electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance rules apply before sale in Great Britain. Specify the contact tip, speed range and accuracy test. Cambridge China Bridge sources contact tachometers.

UK duty on contact tachometers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9029 covers speed indicators and tachometers alongside counters and stroboscopes. Contact tachometers measure rotation through physical contact with a shaft, or surface speed through a measuring wheel. The table separates product configurations sharing a commodity code.

The relevant other-tachometer line, 9029 20 38 90, and other dedicated parts and accessories, 9029 90 00 90, carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete instrument description and intended use, especially for separately supplied wheels or tips. For the wider heading and optical alternatives, see noncontact optical tachometers.

Specify the shaft contact and measuring wheel

State whether you need shaft rotational speed, surface speed or both. Specify cone and cup tips, shaft-end compatibility, wheel material and effective circumference, attachment retention, permitted rotation direction and the measurement range. Agree accuracy, resolution and repeatability separately, with a reference instrument and an acceptance method.

For electronic models, assess electromagnetic compatibility applicability: the rules cover electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. For models within hazardous-substance rules, each product must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Request model-matched compliance evidence through testing and certification.

Electronics and batteries bring producer-responsibility considerations. Electrical equipment producers must register annually. Establish which business handles the applicable obligations before ordering. Specify battery type, replacement access, display readability, automatic shut-off behaviour and instructions for safe contact measurement.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of contact tachometers with tips and wheels for a workshop supplier under 9029 20 38 90, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Accuracy: compare readings with an agreed reference across the specified range, using both shaft tips and measuring wheels where supplied.

Contact assembly: check tip concentricity, bearing smoothness, wheel grip and secure attachment; repeat measurements with the agreed contact pressure.

Display and controls: check unit selection, memory functions, low-battery behaviour and consistency between the display and instructions.

Contents and identification: match tips, wheels, case, model identification and paperwork to the approved sample; use quality inspection to agree batch checks.

What goes wrong

A slipping tip can under-read shaft speed, while an incorrect wheel circumference gives the wrong surface-speed result. Excessive contact pressure can slow a lightly loaded shaft. Worn rubber, loose adaptors and stiff bearings can make readings inconsistent even when the display appears stable.

An optical-mode demonstration does not establish contact-mode accuracy on a combined instrument. Test the ordered contact accessories with the production instrument. Agree replacement tips and wheels by drawing and material, and keep the approved sample for comparison when components change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on contact tachometers from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% duty for other tachometers under 9029 20 38 90 and dedicated parts under 9029 90 00 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can a contact tachometer measure belt speed?

A model with a suitable surface-speed wheel can measure moving-surface speed. Specify wheel circumference, grip material, displayed units and the intended surface before approving the sample.

How should I check contact tachometer accuracy?

Compare it with an agreed reference across the ordered range. Test the supplied tip and wheel separately, control contact pressure and check repeated readings.

Do electronic contact tachometers need UK compliance checks?

Assess electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance applicability for the exact model. Check applicable producer responsibilities, importer identification and model-matched evidence before sale.
