Sourcing concrete test machines from China

Concrete compression testing machines and their dedicated parts from China carry 0% UK duty. Powered machines need machinery conformity documentation, CE or UKCA marking and English instructions for Great Britain. Specify specimen fit and verified loading performance. Cambridge China Bridge sources concrete compression testing machines.

UK duty on concrete compression testers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 24 October 2026, heading 9024 covers machines testing mechanical properties of materials. Concrete compression testing machines fall within 9024 80 00 00; dedicated parts and accessories fall within 9024 90 00 00. The table separates product variants sharing these codes. For the wider heading, see universal tensile testing machines.

Both relevant codes carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension. The machine code carries an import control of mercury. Official guidance identifies additional market controls on measuring devices containing mercury. Ask the supplier to identify any mercury-containing components, and have your customs broker confirm the applicable import requirement before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's actual function and the description of any separately imported accessories. A general hydraulic component is not automatically a dedicated testing-machine part. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify concrete specimens and loading performance

State whether you test cubes, cylinders or both, their dimensions, expected failure loads and the force range you need verified. Specify platen dimensions, test-space clearance, specimen centring, loading-rate control and the method used to calculate and report compressive strength. Ask the factory to demonstrate your specimen types and report format.

For powered machines supplied into Great Britain, confirm with the relevant product safety authority which marking, declaration of conformity, test-space protection and English instructions are required under the applicable machinery safety rules. Compression-machine force verification is covered by ISO 7500-1 in our published background guide. Agree verification after installation with your laboratory before ordering; factory calibration alone does not establish suitability for your testing method.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Three concrete compression testing machines, illustrative only under 9024 80 00 00, invoiced at £42,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £44,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £44,600, so it is £8,920. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Force measurement: match the calibration certificate to the machine serial number and supplied measuring system; witness traceable force checks across the agreed working range.

Specimens and platens: check that your cubes and cylinders fit, centre correctly and contact the platens as intended; inspect platen faces and seating for damage.

Controls and reports: run the agreed loading programme, check specimen dimensions entered into the software, and compare displayed results with the exported report.

Safety and arrival: test the emergency stop and protective enclosure, inspect hydraulic connections for leaks, and check the frame, platens and transit restraints for shipping damage. Use a written inspection checklist.

What goes wrong

A machine can have sufficient maximum force yet perform poorly at the loads used for your specimens. Loading-rate drift, uneven specimen seating, damaged platens or incorrect specimen dimensions in the software can undermine results. Treat a certificate for another serial number or measuring configuration as unresolved evidence.

Agree responsibility for installation, verification, hydraulic servicing, software access and replacement parts before shipment. Have the supplier demonstrate a complete specimen test and save its report for comparison after arrival. Factory verification helps check whether the supplier can perform the promised calibration and functional checks.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on concrete compression testing machines from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% for machines under 9024 80 00 00 and dedicated parts under 9024 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Can the same compression tester test cubes and cylinders?

Ask the supplier to demonstrate both specimen shapes at your dimensions. Check platen contact, centring, clearance and the verified force range rather than relying on the maximum-force rating.

Is a Chinese factory calibration certificate enough?

It is a starting point. Match it to the supplied machine and measuring system, then agree post-installation verification with your laboratory for the intended concrete test method.

Does the mercury tariff control apply to every concrete tester?

The machine code carries the control. Ask the supplier to identify mercury-containing components and your customs broker to confirm the requirement for the actual model before shipment.
