Duty on vegetable cutters and parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, commercial vegetable preparation machinery under 8438 60 00 00 and parts under 8438 90 00 00 carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions for these lines. The table separates cutting functions sharing the same machinery code.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to both lines. Ask whether the machine contains refrigeration and identify any refrigerant. For HFC-pre-charged equipment imported into Great Britain, registration and quota authorisations are required when annual imports reach the equivalent of 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Equipment placed on the market must comply with product bans. Confirm the applicable tariff declaration requirement with your customs broker.

Heading 8438 covers industrial food preparation machinery. Domestic food processors belong elsewhere, and separately supplied components need classification checks. Confirm the commodity code from the machine's function and specification. For another product family within this heading, see commercial meat slicers.

Specify the vegetables, cuts and cleaning method

List the vegetables to be processed, their condition at feeding, and the required slices, dice or shreds. Agree cut dimensions, acceptable broken pieces, feed opening, discharge arrangement and output using your actual ingredients. Specify each blade, disc and grid supplied, how operators change them, and replacement availability.

Agree the electrical supply, installation space and cleaning method. Confirm applicable food-contact materials requirements with the relevant authority. Request material declarations for contact surfaces, plastics, seals and lubricants. New machines sold in Great Britain need CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions; check the documents against the machine supplied.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: four floor-standing commercial vegetable cutting machines under 8438 60 00 00, invoiced at £45,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £48,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £48,500, so it is £9,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Cut quality: trial firm roots, soft vegetables and leafy produce from your intended range; compare finished cuts, crushed pieces, blockages and discharge against the agreed sample.

Guarding: check feed guards, lid interlocks and emergency stops through the manufacturer's test procedure; reject bypassed switches or access to moving blades.

Cleanability: inspect the blade hub, grids, discharge chute, welds and seals for trapped food; demonstrate dismantling and reassembly using the instructions.

Arrival: check transport damage, blade condition, loose fixings, supplied tooling, electrical rating and document identity before commissioning; use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A demonstration using firm potatoes can hide poor results with tomatoes or leafy vegetables. Unsuitable blade and grid combinations crush produce or leave strips joined together. Require trials with your ingredient range and record the tooling used so the production machine can be checked against the approved setup.

Missing interlocks, inaccessible food traps and contact materials without supporting declarations can delay acceptance. A supplied cutting disc may also differ from the trial disc. Agree the cleaning demonstration, document review and spare-tooling list before shipment, with testing and certification support where needed.
