Zero duty on commercial dishwashers

Heading 8422 covers dishwashing machines alongside container-cleaning and packaging machinery. Commercial flight-type dishwashers fall within other dishwashing machines, code 8422 19 00 00. Parts classified as dishwasher parts use 8422 90 10 00. The table separates buying configurations that share these codes.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, both relevant codes carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for either code. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code against the machine's specification and condition at import. Separately supplied motors, pumps and electrical components should not automatically be declared as dishwasher parts. See the wider dishwashers and packaging machinery guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify the conveyor and kitchen connections

Agree conveyor direction, usable loading width, clearance for your largest trays, wash and rinse sections, and whether drying is included. Specify performance using your actual plates, trays, cutlery and food residues. Ask the factory to demonstrate cleaning at the agreed conveyor setting with a continuous mixed load.

Record the site's electrical supply, water pressure, water treatment, drainage and extraction arrangements. Obtain drawings showing service access and delivery clearance before approving the layout. Agree detergent dosing, removable filters, cleaning access and spare conveyor fingers, seals and spray nozzles.

Confirm the applicable machinery conformity assessment, technical file, English instruction and guarding requirements for commercial dishwashers with the relevant product safety authority. Great Britain recognises CE marking indefinitely under the machinery guidance; check the conformity route and supporting documents for the exact supplied configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A commercial flight-type dishwasher for a catering business, illustrative only under 8422 19 00 00, invoiced at £75,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £80,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £80,000, so it is £16,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Conveyor: check travel direction, tracking, loading clearance and transfer through each section using the buyer's plates and trays.

Wash and rinse: log temperatures against the manufacturer's declared figures, check spray coverage and detergent dosing, and inspect the discharged load for residue.

Safety and documents: match the model to the technical documents and English manual, and test guards, access-door interlocks and emergency stops during factory acceptance.

Arrival and connections: inspect transit damage, conveyor alignment, seals and pipework; check backflow protection, drainage and leaks during commissioning.

What goes wrong

A conveyor speed demonstrated with lightly soiled plates may leave residue on your catering trays. Poor loading can shield surfaces from the sprays, while blocked nozzles or inconsistent dosing reduce cleaning. Agree acceptance with representative soil and loads, and record the conveyor setting used.

An unsuitable conveyor direction or inaccessible service panel can make the machine difficult to install and maintain. Shipping damage can disturb alignment or loosen connections. Compare arrival condition with the factory acceptance record and repeat the loaded run after installation.
