Sourcing commercial blast freezers from China
Commercial blast freezers from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected heading 8418 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Refrigerant product bans apply in Great Britain, so check the refrigerant and conformity documents before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources commercial blast freezers.

Duty and classification for blast freezers
Heading 8418 covers refrigerators, freezers and other refrigerating or freezing equipment, including commercial blast freezers. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.
The tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substance restriction to all selected lines and F-gas import controls to the HFC-charged lines. Ozone-depleting substances must not be used in new blast freezers. For HFC-charged equipment, establish whether quota authorisations or delegations are required: where required, insufficient cover prevents import into Great Britain. Give the broker the refrigerant identity, charge and annual import quantities, and confirm the applicable declaration, labelling and exemption documents before dispatch.
The table gives candidate lines for checking classification, not interchangeable codes for every blast freezer. Upright-freezer capacity bands and the other-freezing-equipment category need checking against the actual design and refrigerant. Confirm the commodity code from drawings, cabinet capacity and charging status. For the wider product family, see commercial fridges and display freezers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Upright freezers up to 250 litres, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 40 20 91 | 0% | None |
| Upright freezers up to 250 litres, other | 8418 40 20 99 | 0% | None |
| Upright freezers over 250 litres up to 900 litres, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 40 80 91 | 0% | None |
| Upright freezers over 250 litres up to 900 litres, other | 8418 40 80 99 | 0% | None |

Specify a loaded freezing cycle
Specify the food type, batch weight, tray dimensions and spacing, starting food temperature, target core temperature and maximum cycle duration. Agree the kitchen ambient conditions and probe positions for acceptance testing. Ask for a loaded trial with temperature records; an empty cabinet reaching its set point does not demonstrate the quoted food-processing capacity.
Confirm whether the compressor is built in or supplied separately. Agree the electrical supply, connection method, ventilation clearance, door opening, drainage, defrost arrangement and access for cleaning. Specify removable tray supports, cleanable internal seams and replacement door seals. Obtain the wiring diagram, controller instructions and a spare-parts list.
Confirm with the relevant product-safety authority whether the blast cabinet falls under the professional-refrigeration ecodesign rules identified in the wider guide. Obtain the exact model's product information, test evidence and declaration of conformity supported by technical documentation. For mains-powered equipment, confirm the applicable electrical conformity documents and CE or UKCA marking route with that authority. The importer must ensure that instructions accompany the equipment in easily understandable English.
Check the refrigerant before approving the model. For hermetically sealed commercial refrigerators and freezers containing HFCs, confirm with the Environment Agency whether the refrigerant's global warming potential makes the model prohibited from being placed on the Great Britain market. A tariff line carrying 0% duty does not establish that the machine can legally be sold.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order, not a quote: 10 commercial blast freezers, not pre-charged with HFCs under 8418 69 00 99, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Freezing performance: run the agreed loaded cycle, record food-core temperatures and elapsed time, and check that the controller ends the cycle as specified.
Cabinet and hygiene: inspect tray fit, airflow clearance, internal seams, door seals and drainage; check that removable parts can be cleaned and refitted.
Refrigeration and electrics: match the refrigerant and charge to the documents, inspect pipework for transport damage, and compare the supply rating and wiring diagram with the order.
Arrival and documents: photograph packaging damage before installation, check probes, tray supports and accessories, and match the model plate to the declaration and instructions. Arrange a quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong
A supplier may demonstrate a cold empty cabinet while quoting a batch capacity that the loaded machine cannot achieve. Closely packed trays, unsuitable probe placement or hotter kitchen conditions can change the result. Put the food load and acceptance cycle in the purchase specification, and retain the trial records.
Damaged pipework, leaking door seals, awkward drains and missing controller instructions can delay commissioning. A refrigerant substitution can also invalidate the documents or create a prohibited product. Require written approval for changes to the refrigerant, compressor, controller and insulation, and recheck the supplied model before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on commercial blast freezers from China?
The selected heading 8418 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Which commodity code should I use for a blast freezer?
Check the upright-freezer lines against the cabinet's capacity and design, or the other-freezing-equipment lines where appropriate. The refrigerant and charging status also affect the code. Confirm with your customs broker.
Can I buy an HFC-charged commercial blast freezer?
Check the design and refrigerant first. For hermetically sealed commercial freezers containing HFCs, confirm with the Environment Agency whether the refrigerant's global warming potential makes the model prohibited from being placed on the Great Britain market. Check the applicable F-gas requirements for other models too.
How do I check a factory's blast-freezing capacity claim?
Ask for a loaded trial using the agreed food, batch weight, trays, ambient conditions and probe positions. Compare food-core temperatures and cycle duration with the purchase specification.
