UK duty and specimen classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 9705 covers collections and collectors’ pieces, including those of mineralogical interest. The table repeats 9705 29 00 99 for different buying forms; these are conditional descriptions, not separate tariff lines. The heading also includes 9705 29 00 20 for minerals more than 200 years old. Ask your broker which age category applies rather than choosing it from a supplier’s geological-age claim.

Both relevant lines carry 0% duty from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension. The tariff attaches seal-product and waste import controls. For a China shipment, confirm their application with your broker, including any accompanying materials. Seal products traded into Great Britain need a seal catch certificate. Waste subject to notification controls can be shipped to England after consent from the Environment Agency and other competent authorities involved.

The tariff also lists a DCMS export licence measure, an export restriction and waste export controls; ask your broker to check these before onward export. Confirm the commodity code using the specimen description and supporting documents. Qualifying collectors’ pieces receive reduced import VAT valuation; confirm eligibility and the applicable effective rate with your customs broker before budgeting. See UK import duty and VAT and the wider collectors’ pieces guide.

Specify the specimen and its evidence

Agree whether you are buying an intact specimen, fragment or slice, its claimed meteorite type, mass, dimensions and surface finish. Request photographs of the actual pieces, their individual references, identification reports and the chain of ownership. Ask for the reported find location separately from the Chinese supplier’s address.

For cut specimens, agree polishing, etching, coatings, repairs and any retained natural crust. Specify dry protective packing, separate compartments and how labels remain attached to the correct pieces. Use an independent specialist to review identification evidence before approving stock for resale.

You remain responsible for product safety after placing goods on the market. Review handling risks from sharp cut edges and insecure display mounts, and agree suitable handling information with the supplier.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 200 individually boxed collectible meteorite fragments under 9705 29 00 99, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,000, so it is £1,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match each specimen reference, photograph and report; flag unsupported changes in name or classification.

Measurements: check mass and dimensions against the order, keeping specimen mass separate from the box and stand.

Condition: inspect for rust, loose grains, chips, cracks, concealed repairs and coating changes against dispatch photographs.

Packing: check dry compartments, secure mounts and correctly paired labels. Record discrepancies using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Problems to watch for include ordinary rock or industrial slag sold as meteorite, identification paperwork that does not identify the supplied piece, and fragments substituted after sample approval. A magnetic response alone is insufficient purchasing evidence. Hold uncertain stock for specialist review rather than repeating the supplier’s identification in your sales description.

Moist packing can leave iron-bearing pieces rusty, while loose slices chip against their boxes. Polishing or coating may conceal damage visible only after unpacking. Agree specimen-specific photographs, treatment disclosures and acceptance criteria before shipment, then compare arrival condition before mixing the batch with existing stock.
