Zero duty on collapsible freight containers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8609 covers containers specially designed and equipped for carriage by one or more modes of transport. Collapsible freight containers fall within the relevant 'Other' line, 8609 00 90 00, carrying 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows configurations sharing this commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances, an import control for fluorinated greenhouse gases and a cultural-goods export licence flag to this line. Ask the factory for the materials and any refrigeration equipment details. Confirm the applicable requirements and declaration documents for the actual goods from China with your customs broker, including how the export flag should be treated.

Confirm the commodity code against the complete design and its transport use. A folding storage cabin fitted out as a building may require a different classification. See the wider shipping-container guide. Import VAT still applies to containers imported to remain in the UK; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the folded and erected container

Agree drawings for the erected and folded dimensions, tare weight, payload, corner fittings, floor construction and stacking arrangements. Specify hinges, removable pins, locking devices and replacement seals. Ask for the folding sequence, handling equipment needed and instructions showing where operators stand. Have the factory demonstrate folding and reassembly, then check that the doors close and the structural locks engage.

For international transport, require a valid CSC safety approval plate and the matching approval certificate. Confirm the approving organisation and examination arrangements, as described in the wider guide. Ask for evidence covering the actual collapsible design, and agree inspection of the assembled container through testing and certification support.

If the design includes refrigeration or insulated panels, obtain the refrigerant and insulation specifications. Official guidance prohibits using ozone-depleting substances in new equipment, except recycled halons for critical uses. Products or equipment containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the market in Great Britain. Have your broker confirm how these controls apply to the proposed design.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 collapsible shipping containers, illustrative order only under 8609 00 90 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £6,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £38,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £38,000, so it is £7,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Folding mechanism: operate the hinges and locks through folding and reassembly; check pin retention, alignment, interference and damage to seals.

Structure and approval: match the CSC plate and container identity to the certificate; inspect welds, corner fittings, floor supports and erected dimensions against the agreed drawings.

Weather seals: after reassembly, check door operation and gasket compression, then inspect for light gaps and water ingress at folding joints, roof seams and doors.

Arrival condition: inspect hinge corrosion, coating damage, bent panels and loose hardware before deployment. Check that instructions, spare pins and seals match the delivered design.

What goes wrong

A container can fold successfully yet reassemble poorly. Misaligned hinges can prevent locking pins seating, panels can distort during handling, and folding joints can pinch or displace gaskets. Inspect the erected unit after the folding demonstration, rather than accepting photographs of the folded package.

Missing pins, inaccessible locks and unclear assembly instructions can delay deployment. Agree the spare-parts list and handling method before ordering. Record arrival damage before operating the mechanism, and compare the delivered structure with the approved drawings and certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on collapsible containers from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty under 8609 00 90 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension. Import VAT applies when containers are imported to remain in the UK.

Do collapsible shipping containers need a CSC plate?

Containers used in international transport need a valid CSC safety approval plate. Ask for the approval certificate matching the delivered design and container identity, plus the examination arrangements.

What should I test before accepting a folding container?

Witness folding and reassembly, then check locking-pin retention, structural alignment, door operation and weather seals. Repeat the condition checks on arrival.

Is a folding storage cabin a shipping container?

Classification depends on its design and condition at import. A unit fitted out as a building may fall under prefabricated buildings rather than heading 8609. Confirm the code before ordering.
