Sourcing cold-formed omega sections from China

Cold-formed steel omega sections from China carry 0% UK duty on the relevant lines, with no steel measure or trade remedies recorded. Match the manufacturing route and further processing to the commodity code, and confirm construction-use documents before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources cold-formed steel omega sections.

Omega sections: processing determines the code

Heading 7216 covers angles, shapes and sections of iron or non-alloy steel. Omega sections obtained from flat-rolled products and not further worked than cold-formed or cold-finished are expressly included in 7216 61 10 00. The other table rows show classification boundaries for different manufacturing routes or further working, rather than interchangeable codes for the same profile.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, the listed lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no steel measure, anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls recorded. Confirm the commodity code using the steel composition, production route and any further processing. See the wider cold-formed hat-channel guide.

For imports under heading 7216, confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism applies, when any obligations begin and what registration is needed. Ask the supplier for emissions data and use our UK carbon border adjustment guide to help prepare your enquiries.

Specify the omega profile and fixing interface

Send a dimensioned cross-section showing crown width, overall depth, foot widths, bend radii and any return lips. Specify base-metal thickness separately from coating, steel grade, section length, straightness and twist tolerances. For punched profiles, agree hole diameter, pitch, slot direction and distance from cut ends. Check a sample against the actual brackets and fixings.

State whether the section is a lining support, cladding rail or load-bearing member. Ask the designer to approve section properties and fixing details for the intended application. For construction use, confirm the applicable declaration of performance and marking documents before ordering. Legitimately CE-marked construction products can continue to be supplied to the Great Britain market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial batch of galvanised cold-formed steel omega sections under 7216 61 10 00, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,000, so it is £1,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile: measure crown, depth, feet and bend geometry against the approved drawing; check that fixing faces sit correctly against the mating parts.

Thickness and coating: check base-metal thickness and the agreed coating specification; inspect bends and cut edges for cracking, bare patches and corrosion.

Holes and straightness: check hole alignment, burrs, cut-end squareness, bow and twist before loading and again on arrival.

Traceability and packing: match bundle identification to material certificates and agreed construction documents; check for crushed feet, bent ends and moisture trapped between nested sections.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking omega profile can have narrower fixing feet, different bend radii or thinner base metal than the approved sample. This changes fit and section behaviour. Coating can disguise an under-thickness substrate, while punching and cutting can leave burrs or distort the fixing faces.

Long nested bundles can arrive twisted or with crushed ends, and damp packing can leave corrosion between touching surfaces. Agree drawing tolerances, document acceptance and packing before production. Use a quality inspection to check the production batch rather than relying only on the supplier's sample.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel omega sections from China?

The relevant cold-formed and further-worked lines in the supplied tariff snapshot carried 0% duty, with no steel measure or trade remedies recorded. Ordinary omega sections from flat-rolled steel fall within 7216 61 10 00.

Does punching change the commodity code for omega sections?

It can affect whether the section remains within the line for goods not further worked than cold-formed. Give your customs broker the drawing and full processing details before confirming the code.

What dimensions should I specify for an omega section?

Specify crown width, depth, fixing-foot widths, bend radii, base-metal thickness, length and tolerances. Include hole positions and check the profile with the brackets and fixings you will use.

Can I use CE-marked omega sections in Great Britain?

Legitimately CE-marked construction products can continue to be supplied in Great Britain. Confirm that the supplier's performance and marking documents relate to the actual section and intended construction use.
