Specifying a case

Specify material (wood species, metal, resin or glass), dimensions and the movement and dial space, bezel and glass, back and access, finish and colour against the sample, hanging or standing hardware, and packing. Wooden cases in exotic timbers should be checked for CITES-listed species before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 walnut mantel clock cases under 9112 20 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,900, so it is £3,380. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: fit your movement, dial and hands into sample cases.

Finish: check colour, gloss and joints against the sample.

Packing: drop-test a packed carton, especially with glass. See our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Clock case orders fail on fit, finish and breakage. Movement space is too shallow, finish differs from the sample, and glass bezels break in transit.

Cambridge China Bridge sources components for UK watchmakers, clock makers and repairers from small lots; see small orders.
