Sourcing clip-on spectacle frames from China
Empty clip-on spectacle frames and their parts under heading 9003 carry 0% UK duty from China across the listed materials. UK sellers must not sell products they know, or should know, are unsafe. Confirm classification separately when lenses are fitted. Cambridge China Bridge sources clip-on spectacle frames.

Zero duty on empty clip-on frames
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 9003 covers frames and mountings for spectacles, goggles or similar products, and their parts. This guide concerns empty clip-on frames that attach to a host spectacle frame. Finished spectacles and sunglasses with lenses fall under heading 9004. For conventional frames, see the wider spectacle-frame guide.
All supplied commodity lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, or tariff suspension, is listed. The non-plastic frame and parts lines carry CITES import and export controls. CITES specimens require an import permit. Ask the supplier to identify any animal or plant materials, and have your customs broker confirm the applicable CITES requirements before shipment.
The titanium-alloy parts line 9003 90 00 20 also carries a supplementary-unit import measure. Ask your customs broker to confirm the declaration requirement if importing those parts. The table gives material and parts categories, rather than a dedicated clip-on code. Confirm the commodity code using the materials, construction, intended use and whether lenses are fitted.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic clip-on frames and mountings, without lenses | 9003 11 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Base-metal clip-on frames and mountings, without lenses | 9003 19 00 40 | 0% | None |
| Clip-on frames of other materials, without lenses | 9003 19 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Other parts of clip-on spectacle frames | 9003 90 00 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the host frame and attachment
Supply the actual host spectacle frame alongside a dimensioned drawing. Agree the clip position, bridge shape, frame curvature, clearance from the host lenses and the contact-pad material. For magnetic attachments, specify magnet position, polarity and retention against an approved sample. State whether the order contains empty mountings, replacement parts or lens-fitted products.
For frames intended to hold corrective lenses, confirm with MHRA whether medical-device rules apply and what declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking, registration and overseas manufacturer's UK Responsible Person arrangements are applicable. Confirm the intended use before approving packaging or listings.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,500 base-metal clip-on frames without lenses under 9003 19 00 40, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: attach samples to the approved host frame and check alignment, bridge seating and clearance throughout opening, closing and removal.
Retention: repeat attachment and removal, checking for loose magnets, weakening clips, displaced pads and damage to the host frame or lenses.
Finish: inspect contact surfaces for burrs, sharp edges, exposed metal and coating damage. Compare the alloy, colour and pad material with the approved sample.
Packing: check model matching, attachment instructions and protective separation in each pack. At quality inspection, test production samples against the host frame rather than relying on photographs.

What goes wrong
A clip-on can match the outline of a host frame yet sit at the wrong angle or press against its lenses. Clips can scratch coatings, pads can slip and magnets can detach. Specify the host model and contact geometry, then retain an approved assembled sample for production checks.
Mixed host-frame and clip-on models create returns even when each component looks acceptable alone. Check every ordered pairing and keep mismatched stock apart. UK businesses must not sell products they know, or should have known, are unsafe.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
