Sourcing breaker terminal shrouds from China

Circuit-breaker terminal shrouds from China carry 0% UK duty when classified as other parts under heading 8538. The finished electrical assembly must meet applicable electrical safety rules. Specify the exact breaker model, insulating material and terminal coverage. Cambridge China Bridge sources circuit-breaker terminal shrouds.

Zero duty on terminal shrouds

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8538 covers parts suitable for use solely or principally with the apparatus of headings 8535, 8536 or 8537. For separate insulating circuit-breaker terminal shrouds, 8538 90 99 99 is the candidate other-parts line. The table shows shroud variants against the same tariff line, rather than separate classifications.

All supplied commodity lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The candidate shroud line records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is separate from customs duty; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, material details, photographs and the intended breaker application. For the wider heading and related mouldings, see moulded circuit-breaker cases.

Specify the breaker interface and insulation

Specify the breaker manufacturer, model and frame size, terminal arrangement, cable or busbar connection, fixing method and whether the shroud covers incoming or outgoing terminals. Supply mating drawings and an actual breaker for sample fitting. Agree cable openings, access for tightening terminals and how the shroud is removed for maintenance.

Name the resin grade, colour, permitted use of reprocessed material and required heat, flame and electrical insulation performance. Agree test methods and acceptance criteria with the panel builder. Keep the approved sample and material evidence tied to the drawing revision and production batch.

The finished low-voltage assembly must meet the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 where applicable. Official guidance also says components may require individual conformity assessment and marking. Confirm the treatment of the exact shroud and intended use before sale through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: 5000 moulded circuit-breaker terminal shrouds under 8538 90 99 99, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,600, so it is £1,120. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: mount arrival samples on the specified breaker with the intended cable lugs or busbar. Check seating, terminal coverage, cable openings and access to terminal screws.

Retention: check that clips engage fully and screw fixings seat correctly. Remove and refit samples using the agreed method, checking for cracks, loose clips and distortion.

Moulding and material: check wall thickness against the drawing, flash around openings, incomplete moulding and sharp edges. Match resin records and test reports to the supplied material and batch.

Packing and identification: match part references and drawing revisions to carton contents. Check for crushed clips, mixed variants and missing fixings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A shroud can resemble the approved sample yet fail to seat because its clip position, terminal pitch or cable opening differs. A forced fit can crack the moulding or leave a terminal exposed. Fit samples with the actual connection hardware before approving bulk production, then repeat the check on arrival.

Resin substitution and excessive reprocessed material can change brittleness and insulation performance without an obvious colour change. A report for the breaker or another moulding does not establish the performance of the supplied shroud. Agree material traceability and reject unapproved changes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on circuit-breaker terminal shrouds from China?

The supplied tariff data records 0% duty for other parts under 8538 90 99 99, with no trade remedy, suspension or attached import control. Confirm that the exact shroud belongs in this line.

Will a terminal shroud fit any circuit breaker?

Do not assume interchangeability. Match the breaker model, frame size, terminal arrangement and connection hardware, then fit the sample on the actual breaker.

Do terminal shrouds need CE or UKCA marking?

Official guidance says components may require individual conformity assessment and marking. Assess the exact shroud and intended use with a compliance adviser.

What should I check when the shrouds arrive?

Check fit on the specified breaker, terminal coverage, clip retention, cracks, moulding flash, material records and carton identification against the approved sample and drawing.
