Chromium trioxide duty and waste controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 11 November 2026, heading 2819 covers chromium oxides and hydroxides. Chromium trioxide has its own line, 2819 10 00 00, carrying 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. For goods from China that are waste and fall under notification controls, shipment to England can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved. Confirm the waste classification and applicable requirements with your customs broker before shipment. The attached export waste control also needs checking before any return shipment.

The table contains the sole chromium trioxide line in the supplied facts. Do not confuse it with chromium dioxide or dichromium trioxide. Confirm the commodity code against the actual substance and consult the wider chromium oxides guide for related products.

Specify assay, sulphate and the authorised use

Confirm with HSE whether chromium trioxide is on the UK REACH authorisation list and what authorisation conditions, sunset-date rules or exemptions apply to supplying it for your intended use or using it in Great Britain. Check the actual decision and supply chain before ordering: an upstream authorisation does not cover downstream users outside that supply chain.

Specify chromium trioxide assay, sulphate and insoluble matter limits, flake form, the sampling procedure and analytical methods. Require a certificate of analysis tied to the shipment batch. Agree drum construction, closure, seals and identification, with packing suitable for an oxidising, toxic and corrosive substance.

Confirm the UK REACH registration route for the importing business separately from authorisation. Registration is per substance and per legal entity. Include an English safety data sheet and the applicable classification labels in the document review.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of chromium trioxide flakes under 2819 10 00 00, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £42,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £42,000, so it is £8,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Documents: match the substance, batch and certificate of analysis; review the English safety data sheet, registration route and authorisation covering the intended use.

Analysis: have a competent laboratory check a representative batch sample for assay, sulphate and insoluble matter against the agreed specification.

Drums: check seals, closures, damage, leakage, batch identification and labels against the approved packing documents.

Arrival: record drum condition before acceptance and reconcile the delivered batch with the tested batch. Use the quality inspection guide to structure the records.

What goes wrong

A certificate can describe a different batch, sulphate or insoluble matter can exceed the agreed limits, and damaged closures can compromise delivery. Specify acceptance criteria and batch traceability before production, then hold material with unexplained discrepancies for assessment.

Buying against an authorisation that covers a different use or supply chain can leave stock that cannot legally be used as intended. Resolve that point before payment. Ask for factory verification to check the producer's batch records and laboratory arrangements.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on chromium trioxide from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for 2819 10 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension, read on 11 November 2026.

Can I import chromium trioxide for chrome plating?

Check that UK REACH authorisation covers the intended plating use in Great Britain, or that an exemption applies. Confirm the registration route and dangerous goods packing before ordering.

Does my supplier's authorisation cover my business?

An upstream authorisation does not cover downstream users outside its supply chain. Check the decision against your intended use and the parties in the proposed supply chain.

What should I test in chromium trioxide flakes?

Check assay, sulphate and insoluble matter against agreed limits using stated analytical methods. Match the sample and certificate of analysis to the delivered batch.
