Sourcing Chilled Trout from China

The supplied chilled trout lines carry UK duty of 8% to 12% from China; the listed rainbow trout line pays 12%. Imports need an approved establishment; confirm the applicable health documents with APHA or your customs broker. Chinese farmed trout also needs an official declaration containing pre-shipment residue test results. Cambridge China Bridge sources chilled trout.

Chilled trout duty and border controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the supplied trout lines under heading 0302 carry 8% for Apache or golden trout and 12% for the listed rainbow trout line. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded on these lines. The heading covers fresh or chilled fish, excluding fillets and other fish meat.

Both supplied trout codes carry veterinary, illegal fishing and organic import controls. For Great Britain, check country and establishment approval, and confirm health certification, pre-notification and the designated border control post with APHA or your customs broker. Confirm the veterinary entry document with your customs broker. Ask the broker to confirm catch-certificate applicability for the exact production method. For organic food from China, confirm inspection-certificate requirements with the relevant organic control body before shipment.

The supplied facts contain only these trout codes; the repeated rainbow trout rows show different forms sharing a code. Check the scientific species, head-on or headless form and individual fish weight against the full tariff description using our commodity code guide. Other trout sizes need a separate code check. For the wider heading, see our chilled salmon guide.

Specify trout form, freshness and delivery condition

Specify the scientific species, farmed or wild origin, harvest location, head-on or headless form, gutting and gill removal, individual weight grade and flesh colour. Agree net fish weight separately from packing ice, acceptable skin damage, cavity cleanliness and the condition expected when the fish reaches your premises.

Agree harvest and packing records, temperature recording, insulated packaging, drainage and the remaining shelf life you will accept on arrival. Check the proposed journey and border handling arrangements before ordering. Our factory verification service can help organise supplier checks.

Chinese farmed fish requires an official declaration containing pre-shipment chemical test results. The checks cover chloramphenicol, nitrofuran and its metabolites, plus malachite green, crystal violet and their metabolites. Obtain the declaration for the actual consignment rather than relying on an unrelated supplier laboratory report.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative hypothetical order: 2 tonnes of chilled rainbow trout within this code's weight limits under 0302 11 80 11, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 12% is £2,100. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £19,600, so it is £3,920. Import taxes total £6,020; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,100 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity and size: match species, head and gutting condition, individual weights and batch marks to the specification and shipping documents.

Freshness and handling: inspect eyes, gills, odour, flesh firmness, bruising and belly condition; compare arrival temperatures with the journey record and agreed acceptance criteria.

Weight and packaging: weigh fish separately from ice, check drainage and inspect liners, lids and cartons for leaks or crushing.

Documents and labels: match approval details, health documents and the Chinese residue declaration to the batch. Check English retail labels for species, production method and area, fish allergen information, storage instructions and a UK address.

What goes wrong

A supplier may describe rainbow trout simply as salmon, supply oversized fish under the listed code, or change the head and gutting condition after the order is agreed. Record the scientific name and presentation in the purchase specification, then compare the packed batch with it.

Temperature excursions, poor drainage and rough handling can leave soft flesh, damaged bellies or little usable shelf life. Document delays can prolong the journey. Review the batch documents before dispatch and agree who records arrival condition and handles rejected stock. See our inspection guide.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
