Sourcing cast iron valve boxes from China

Cast iron valve boxes from China pay 0% ordinary UK duty. Ground-system covers and access parts in grey or ductile iron can also attract anti-dumping duty from 15.5% to 38.1%. Confirm the iron type, use and exporter before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources cast iron valve boxes.

Zero ordinary duty, with anti-dumping exposure

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7325 covers other cast articles of iron or steel. For valve boxes, distinguish grey iron from ductile iron and identify whether each casting covers or provides access to an underground system. The table includes the ground-system lines and other-casting alternatives for parts genuinely outside that description.

The supplied lines show 0% ordinary duty for goods from China. Grey iron ground-system articles under 7325 10 00 31 and ductile iron equivalents under 7325 99 10 60 show 38.10 % residual anti-dumping duty. Named exporter rates range from 15.5% to 31.5% with the required invoice declaration. No suspensions, countervailing duties or attached import controls are recorded in the supplied snapshot.

Give your customs broker the drawing, iron grade, intended installation and description of the supplied parts. Do not select an other-casting line simply because the invoice says valve box. Use finding your commodity code, and see the wider cast iron covers and castings guide.

Specify the lid, box depth and valve access

State whether you need complete boxes, lids with frames, extension sections or replacement lids. Specify the iron grade, clear opening, overall depth, seating profile, wall thickness and coating. For adjustable boxes, show the adjustment range and how the sections engage. Check that the opening allows the intended operating key to reach and turn the valve spindle.

Agree the intended pedestrian or vehicle exposure with the project buyer, and put the required test method and acceptance criteria in the order. Match reports to the actual lid and frame design. Under the EU construction-products route, CE marking requires a harmonised standard or a European Technical Assessment; CE marking remains available for construction products in Great Britain. Check the applicable route before requesting a mark.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 500 small grey iron valve-box cover sets; anti-dumping duty must also be assessed under 7325 10 00 31, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,500, so it is £900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match casting identification and material certificates to the ordered iron grade; inspect for cracks, porosity, shrinkage and incomplete casting around the lid seat.

Fit and access: measure the opening and depth, seat lids in their frames, operate hinges or locks, and try the intended valve key through an assembled box.

Load and finish: witness the agreed load test, check deformation after unloading, and inspect coating coverage on edges, undersides and seating surfaces.

Arrival and traceability: check for chipped rims, missing lids and mixed sizes, and retain casting and batch identification. The inspection guide helps organise the checks.

What goes wrong

A lid can match the outside dimensions yet rock in its frame because the seating profile differs. An extension can fit the box but leave insufficient clearance for the valve key. Coating can hide casting defects or interfere with lid seating. Approve an assembled sample and retain the agreed drawing before production.

A quote showing only ordinary duty can omit the anti-dumping cost on underground-access castings. Confirm the actual producer and applicable invoice declaration before shipment. Keep complete boxes and separately supplied parts clearly described in the paperwork, and use the duty and VAT guide when checking landed cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on cast iron valve boxes from China?

Ordinary duty is 0%. Grey and ductile iron ground-system lines also show 38.10 % residual anti-dumping duty. A qualifying named exporter rate may apply with the required invoice declaration.

Does a cast iron valve box need CE marking?

Check the exact product and conformity route. Under the EU construction-products route, CE marking needs a harmonised standard or European Technical Assessment. A load-test report alone does not establish that route.

Can I buy replacement valve-box lids without frames?

Yes, but provide the existing frame's seating profile, opening and hinge or lock details. Approve a fitted sample; matching the outside dimensions alone does not establish interchangeability.

What should I inspect when valve boxes arrive?

Check lid seating, cracks, chipped rims, coating, missing parts and casting identification. Assemble adjustable sections and confirm that the intended valve key can reach and operate the spindle.
