Brass handbells: 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, non-electric brass handbells fall within the bells, gongs and similar goods line, 8306 10 00 00, at 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this line.

Heading 8306 also covers base metal ornaments, frames and mirrors. The handbell variants in the table share the same tariff line; they are purchasing specifications, not separate commodity codes. See the metal ornaments and photo frames guide for the wider heading.

Confirm the commodity code using the bell's material, construction and intended use before ordering. This guide concerns non-electric handbells, rather than electronic doorbells. The import duty and VAT guide explains the separate import VAT calculation.

Specify the bell, clapper and handle

Specify solid brass rather than a brass-coloured finish, alloy composition, bell diameter and height, wall thickness, weight, handle material and attachment, clapper material and suspension, engraving and lacquer. Agree the sound against an approved sample, including whether the bell rings freely when shaken gently.

For consumer handbells sold in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Assess sharp rims, loose clappers and handles that detach. Confirm with the relevant authority whether UK REACH lead restrictions or exemptions apply to the actual product, particularly if children could put it in their mouths. Specify the alloy and arrange testing appropriate to the actual product.

If the bell is designed or clearly intended for children's play, assess toy safety rather than treating it simply as a decorative gift. Use the toy safety guide when deciding the intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business shipment of individually boxed brass handbells under 8306 10 00 00, invoiced at £1,600 free on board, with £432 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,032. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,032, so it is £406.40. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: compare the alloy report with the agreed specification and check that the bell body is brass rather than a plated substitute.

Sound and retention: shake sampled bells, compare the ring with the approved sample, and check the clapper suspension and handle attachment for looseness.

Finish: inspect the rim and casting for burrs, cracks and pits; compare polish, lacquer and engraving with the approved sample.

Packing: check individual wrapping prevents metal rubbing against metal, handles are supported, and unpacked samples show no dents or scratches. Agree packed-carton checks through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

An approved sample can ring clearly while production bells sound dull because the casting, wall thickness or clapper position changes. Loose handle fixings and clapper suspension can also leave detached parts. Keep the approved sample and check production sound and attachment security before shipment.

Polished brass can arrive scratched or unevenly tarnished when lacquer coverage and wrapping vary. Agree whether the finish is bare brass or lacquered, inspect casting pits before polishing hides them, and check engraving position and legibility against the artwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on brass handbells from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for non-electric brass handbells under 8306 10 00 00, with no listed trade remedies, suspensions or import controls.

How do I check that a handbell is solid brass?

Specify the alloy composition and request a material report for the bell body. Check production material against that specification; a brass-coloured surface alone does not establish the underlying metal.

What should I check when brass handbells arrive?

Compare sound, dimensions and finish with the approved sample. Check the handle and clapper are secure, the rim has no burrs, and wrapping has prevented dents and scratches.

Can a brass handbell be a toy?

If designed or clearly intended for children's play, confirm with the relevant authority whether toy safety requirements apply. Assess its intended use before ordering; a decorative description alone does not settle the question.
