Duty depends on the crystal form

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 2850 covers hydrides, nitrides, azides, silicides and borides, excluding compounds also classified as carbides. Cubic boron nitride under 2850 00 20 70 has a 4% base duty and a 0% suspension. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products containing different components. Hexagonal boron nitride under 2850 00 20 90 pays 4%; that line's limited suspension does not cover it.

The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines. They attach import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For powder supplied from China as waste, confirm the applicable import requirement with your customs broker before shipment; the tariff control alone does not settle the procedure for a particular consignment.

Specify crystal form and powder performance

Write hexagonal or cubic boron nitride explicitly. Specify purity, oxygen, carbon, free boron and metal impurity limits, particle size distribution, specific surface area and the test methods. For cubic abrasive material, also agree grit size and toughness. Ask for a certificate of analysis tied to each production lot and an approved sample for comparison.

For Great Britain, establish the UK REACH route before ordering. Confirm with HSE whether registration arrangements or coverage through an only representative apply to your annual imports of the substance. Obtain an English safety data sheet where required and settle the applicable chemical classification, labelling and packaging. Agree sealed packing and sample retention with the factory.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of hexagonal boron nitride powder under 2850 00 20 90, invoiced at £50,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £52,000. Duty at 4% is £2,080. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,080, so it is £10,816. Import taxes total £12,896; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,080 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check independent phase analysis against the specified hexagonal or cubic form.

Batch results: compare purity, oxygen, impurities and particle size with the agreed limits and the lot certificate.

Packaging: inspect seals, liners, moisture damage, clumping, net weight and batch markings.

Documents: match the invoice, lot certificate, safety data sheet and UK REACH arrangements to the supplied powder. Use quality inspection to agree sampling before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A generic boron nitride description can conceal the wrong crystal form or grade. Powder may have a different particle size distribution from the approved sample, excess impurities or moisture-related clumping. A certificate without a matching lot reference leaves the buyer unable to connect the results to the delivered stock.

Make acceptance depend on the written specification and agreed sampling method. Test the production lot before dispatch and retain samples for arrival comparisons. Do not assume that every boron nitride grade receives the cubic material's tariff suspension.
