Boron carbide powder duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, boron carbide under 2849 90 10 00 carries 4% duty for goods from China. Heading 2849 covers carbides, whether or not chemically defined. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded for this line. The powder descriptions in the table share the same commodity code.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. For powder offered as recovered material or waste, confirm the applicable requirements with your customs broker before shipment. For waste imports under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent. Confirm how this applies to the proposed shipment from China.

Give your broker the composition, physical form and intended use to confirm the commodity code. See the wider carbide guide for other products in this heading.

Specify chemistry and particle distribution

Specify boron carbide content, boron and carbon analysis, free carbon, oxygen and metallic impurities. State whether the powder is for abrasive use or ceramic production. Agree the particle-size distribution, permitted coarse particles and measurement method, rather than accepting a grade name alone.

Ask for a batch certificate tied to the supplied powder and retain an approved sample. Agree moisture limits, sealed inner packaging and batch identification. For ceramic production, trial the powder in your own forming and firing process before accepting bulk stock.

Before ordering, confirm with HSE whether UK REACH registration or only-representative coverage applies to your imports of the substance. Substances and mixtures must be correctly labelled and packaged before being placed on the Great Britain market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of boron carbide powder for a small ceramic producer under 2849 90 10 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,500. Duty at 4% is £1,300. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,800, so it is £6,760. Import taxes total £8,060; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,300 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Chemistry: compare independent sample results with the agreed boron carbide content and impurity limits.

Particle distribution: test samples from several containers using the agreed method; check the coarse tail as well as the reported average.

Condition: inspect for moisture, hard agglomerates, damaged seals and contamination during packing.

Traceability: match container labels, batch certificates and retained samples. Set the sampling plan using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A powder can meet an average particle size while containing coarse particles that affect finishing or processing. Free carbon, metallic contamination and inconsistent chemistry can also make an approved sample a poor predictor of the delivered batch.

Avoid accepting a certificate without a batch identity or comparing results obtained by different methods. Hold stock with unexplained test differences until the supplier and your laboratory resolve them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on boron carbide powder from China?

The recorded duty is 4% under 2849 90 10 00, with no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension shown.

Does boron carbide powder need UK REACH registration?

Check with HSE whether registration or only-representative coverage applies to your imports of the substance. Confirm the position before ordering.

What should I put in a boron carbide powder specification?

Specify chemistry, free carbon, oxygen, metallic impurities, particle-size distribution, coarse-particle limits, moisture and agreed test methods.

Is the supplier's batch certificate enough?

Match it to the supplied batch and verify samples against agreed tests. Retain a reference sample and trial the powder in your process.
